Augustana opens Division II WCWS with win

DENVER, Colo. – Ashley Mickschl tossed a one-hit shutout and three different Vikings drove in a pair of runs as third-seeded Augustana opened the NCAA Division II Women’s College World Series with an 8-0, five-inning win over UC San Diego on Thursday night at The Regency Athletic Complex.

Mickschl (28-5) struck out three batters and walked one while recording her seventh shutout of the season. She went 2-for-3 with a two-run double at the plate.

Maggie Kadrlik was 3-for-3 with a two-bagger. Mary Pardo, who finished 2-for-3, and Shannon Petersen both homered.

Pardo opened the bottom of the first with a solo shot.

Mickschl’s two-run double came in the second and extended the lead to 3-0.

Petersen blasted a two-run homer in the third.

Brookings native Kara McDougall, a junior, came through with a two-RBI double later in the inning to push the advantage to 7-0.

Petersen scored on Maggie Dunnett’s fielder’s choice in the fourth to provide for the final margin.

The Vikings (57-10) take on second-seeded West Florida (54-9) in a winner’s bracket game today at 2:30 p.m.
