Bandits drop two games to open The Dakota Classic

SIOUX FALLS – The Bandits dropped a pair of pool-play games in The Dakota Classic, hosted by Renner, on Friday at Harmodon, falling 7-4 to Papio South, Neb., and 9-2 to Sioux Falls West.

Brookings (0-6) closes out pool play facing Viroqua, Wis., at 1 p.m. today. The tournament concludes Sunday.

The Bandits put up two runs in the top of the first, but Post 32 answered with seven consecutive runs and then held on to record the victory.

Papio South scored one run in both the first and fourth frames to pull even, before putting up a three-spot in the fifth and adding two runs in the sixth to move ahead 7-2.

Rhett Zelinski, who finished 3-for-3 with a walk, Jacob Schoon and Ryan McMacken tallied one-out singles in the top of the seventh to load the bases.

Parker Rykhus hit into a elder’s choice, which allowed Zelinski to score. Tanner Shepardson, who was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, followed with a run-scoring single to cut the deficit to 7-4.

Christian Mediger singled to reload the bases; however, Nolan Conyeas took over on the mound and recorded a strikeout to end it.

Post 74 scored first, putting up a pair of runs in the opening inning.

Tyler Kreutner was hit by a pitch and stole second to get it going. Zelinski quickly drove him in with a hit.

Schoon was hit by a pitch and, who one away, Rykhus drew a base on balls. Shepardson’s elder’s choice drove in Zelinski to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the first, Papio South’s Nate Denne doubled, took third on a passed ball and scored on Sawyer Petersen’s groundout.

Bodi Wallar drew a one-out walk in the fourth and advanced to second on a Hunter Woods sacrifice. Marshall Oseatoski came through with an RBI single, knotting the score at 2-all.

Denne got Post 32 going in the fifth with a one-out walk. Sawyer Petersen’s single chased Post 74 starter Zelinski.

Denne scored on a wild pitch and Grant Oseka tripled off reliever McMacken to drive in another run. Oseka sprinted home on Ryan Petersen’s squeeze bunt to push the margin to 5-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Woods walked. Oseatoski bunted and reached on an error, allowing Woods to get to third; however, he was caught stealing second soon thereafter.

Zach Jackson and Sawyer Petersen sandwiched RBI hits around Denne’s bunt single to provide for the final margin.

Denne was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Sawyer Petersen added two hits and two RBIs. Oseatoski, who also doubled, and Oseka added two hits and an RBI apiece.

Austin Sides picked up the win in relief of starter Lane Harris, giving up two runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts in two innings of action. Conyeas was credited with a save. Harris allowed two runs on three hits and six walks with a strikeout in 4 2/3 innings.

Zelinski surrendered four runs on five hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings in the loss. McMacken allowed three runs on four hits and one walk in 1 2/3.

Post 15 scored five runs in the bottom of the first to overcome and early deficit en route to the win over Post 74.

Matt Fiegen tossed a complete game, giving up two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts.

Leadoff hitter John Rogers led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of walks. Grady Gulbanson and Joe Lund each totaled two RBIs.

Brookings’ Tyler Kreutner and Brady Ammann both finished 2-for-4.

Ammann tripled with one out in the first and scored on Ryan McMacken’s two-out double.

Rogers and Karsten Grove opened the bottom of the inning with singles, and Mason Crow drew a one-out walk.

Lund was hit by a pitch to force in Rogers. Gulbanson stepped up with a two-run single. Ben Simonsen plated Lund with a sacrifice fly. Gulbanson later scored on a wild pitch following an error to make it 5-1.

In the third, Lund walked and moved to third on an error and, after Simonsen drew a one-out base on balls, scored on a wild pitch. Cole Adam walked and Rogers drew a two-out free pass. Grove then reached on an error, as Simonsen and Adam scored on the play to push the margin to 8-1.

Back-to-back singles by Kreutner and Ammann with one away in the top of the fifth put runners on the corners for the Bandits. Jacob Schoon recorded a sacrifice fly soon thereafter.

Sioux Falls West closed out the scoring in the sixth after Crow tripled and scored on Lund’s sacrifice fly.

Kreutner took the loss after giving up five runs – four earned – on four hits and two walks in two innings. Justin Devine surrendered three runs – one earned – with five walks and a strikeout in two innings. Parker Rykhus allowed one run on one hit with three strikeouts and two walks over the final three frames.
