BFD puts out car fire, assists at semi rollover

BROOKINGS – The Brookings Fire Department’s Friday started early with a call-out at 6:12 a.m. for a semi rollover, then the tones sounded again for a car fire at 8:56 a.m.

A semi driver hauling wheat rolled his rig at the stop sign where Highway 14 and the Highway 14 bypass intersect east of Brookings, Deputy Fire Chief Pete Bolzer said.

The BFD assisted “one male occupant out of the semi with no injuries,” he said.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is lead investigative agency on the accident.

The second call was for a car on fire in an attached garage at 1205 Forest St.

“It was fully engulfed in the engine compartment,” Bolzer said.

There were no injuries, but the Pontiac was a total loss, he said.

“The fire was confined to the vehicle. No damage to the house or the garage,” he added

“There was either a short in the battery cable or the battery exploded,” Bolzer said of the cause.

He estimated the fire crew was there about an hour.
