BROOKINGS – The Brookings High School Marching Band participated in the Tri-State Band Competition on Sept. 29, bringing home the “Star of the Great Plains” sweepstakes award.
The event included parade competition in Luverne, Minnesota, and field competition in Brandon.
In Luverne, the band received a parade score of 77.6, tying with Worthington, Minnesota. The overall field competition score was 79.1. Brookings placed first in field for winds, color guard and percussion.
Following the Luverne competition, the band traveled to Brandon to complete the Tri-State Music Festival competition.
At Brandon, despite cold and damp weather, the competition continued. Brookings showcased its “Connected” competition performance. Members’ efforts resulted in receiving third place overall and first in Class AA in marching execution and percussion.
Although the event is held in two different locations, the band with the highest combined total scores of the two performances is awarded the sweepstakes award. Sponsored by both Tri-State and Big Sioux Review, the sweepstakes award is known as the “Star of the Great Plains.”
For the first time in history, this combined prize was awarded to the Brookings Bobcat band.
The band will again be in competition this weekend. BHS musicians are in Chester for a marching competition starting at 10 a.m. today on Main Street in Chester.
On Saturday, the band will start The Festival of Bands competition at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.
The 8 a.m. parade, following a new route this year, will not be in downtown Sioux Falls. The parade will instead be at Veterans Park, just off Western Avenue. This is close to the convention center and the field events.
The band’s preliminary performance to qualify for the evening finals event will be at 4 p.m. The top 10 bands with the highest preliminary scores will present the Festival of Bands final performances starting at 7 p.m. Saturday.
