BROOKINGS — A blaze Friday involving a box truck on Interstate 29 caused an estimated $57,000 in damage, but no one was injured, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred at 5:12 p.m. at mile marker 147 and involved a 2012 Dodge Ram 5500, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote in the release. The damage estimated included the truck and its contents.

The truck’s driver and a passenger were traveling on I-29 when they heard an odd noise from the truck and pulled over to investigate, according to the release. Once stopped, the occupants saw fire under the truck and unsuccessfully attempted to douse the flames with a fire extinguisher. The driver and passenger were able to exit the truck uninjured and wait for emergency crews. Once at the scene, crews were able to quickly extinguish the flames.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, and the incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office, Sebring wrote. Other agencies that responded were the South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Brookings Fire Department.
