Bombers Maroon go 2-2 at Mid Summer Classic

SIOUX FALLS – The Bombers Maroon posted a 2-2 record at the Mid Summer Classic at Harmodon over the weekend as Brookings beat the Billings Black Sox, 20-2, on Friday night before knocking off Renner, 10-2, on Saturday.

Maroon lost their final pool-play on Saturday night to Sioux Falls Post 15 13/14 East, 9-4.

In Sunday’s championship bracket, the Bombers came up short in a 6-3 lost to Sioux Falls East 13s.

Brookings plays host to Sioux Falls West on Tuesday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Mickelson Field.

Friday

• Brookings 20, Billings 2

Maroon built a 10-2 lead after 1 1/2 innings before putting up 10 runs in the fourth to end the game early via the run rule.

Justin Cofell had four hits – including a double – to drive in six runs to lead the offense. Carter Wright had a double and two singles with an RBI while Parker Winghart drove in two runs with a single and a walk.

Kellan Aure doubled and singled; Max Enevoldsen hit a double and had three runs batted in as Rocky Dauphinias added a pair of hits and an RBI.

Winghart earned the win on the mound after giving up two runs – one earned – on four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.

Saturday

• Brookings 10, Renner 2

Maroon led 5-0 after four innings and then tacked on five runs in the bottom of the sixth for the eight-run win.

Wright had a double and two singles to drive in two runs as Winghart also had a double and two RBIs. Matt Nordmeyer also drove in two runs; Nathan Lease had two hits and an RBI; and Zach Struck hit a double.

Cofell picked up the win after allowing two runs – one earned – on six hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

• S.F. East 13/14 9, Brookings 4

The Bombers led 2-1 through 3 1/2 innings before East scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to take control.

Davin Carlson suffered the loss after surrendering nine runs – seven earned – on seven hits and a walk over 3 1/3 innings. Struck threw 2 2/3 frames of relief and gave up a hit and a walk to go along with two strikeouts.

Winghart and Cofell each had two hits as Andrew Bishop drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. 

Sunday

• S.F. East 13 6, Brookings 3

East scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and then tacked on two in the fifth after Maroon pulled within 4-2.

Lease went the distance on the mound, giving up six runs – four earned – on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

Struck doubled and singled and drove in a run while Wright and Bishop each had a single and RBI.

Aure, Cofell, Lease and Jaxton Eck added a single apiece as Maroon outhit Sioux Falls, 8-5.
