Brookings Community Music School expands curriculum

BROOKINGS – Another dimension in music has arrived with the new address for the Brookings Community Music School (BCMS).  For the first time, Musikgarten – a program developed especially for pre-schoolers and their parents – will be offered in Brookings.

Owner and Director Mary Ermel Walker and her staff have spent the last six weeks moving BCMS from downtown Main Avenue to 321 Sixth St.

“We no longer need to fret about parking during busy city events,” said Walker. “Our new studio is part of the Moriarty Complex at the corner of Main Avenue and Sixth Street.  The new facility gives us enough room to have pre-schoolers and parents enjoy MusikGarten  on Friday mornings. It is also a convenient place to drop off older students for their afterschool lessons.”

Musikgarten opened in 1994 when Dr. Lorna Lutz Heyge merged her music education background with the experience and input of childhood education specialist, Audrey Sillick. These two women are the authors of the early childhood music curricula that comprise Musikgarten.

This year’s program, The Cycle of Seasons, incorporates all the senses with singing, playing instruments, purposeful movement activities and focused listening.  All of this adds up to the first patterns children need to read music notation in coming years.

Walker and her staff will provide detailed information when they are featured during an upcoming One Million Cups presentation  at the Children’s Museum in Brookings.
