BROOKINGS — No injuries were reported in a vehicle fire at Brookings High School on Wednesday morning.
The blaze, which damaged a 2007 Toyota Camry in the school’s west parking lot, was reported at 8:45 a.m., Brookings Fire Department Chief Pete Bolzer wrote in an email. He said the first fire engine on the scene reported that the blaze was in the vehicle’s engine compartment, and that firefighters used portable fire extinguishers to keep it from spreading to nearby vehicles. The fire was doused once other fire engines arrived.
Bolzer indicated that the fire was accidental in nature, originating in the Camry’s engine compartment due to an electrical short-circuit in the battery area.
He added that no damage estimate was available, and that fire engines remained on the scene until 9:30 a.m.
