Cubs have polar opposite games in Atwater

ATWATER, Minn. – The Cubs split a pair of games at the Atwater Tournament on Saturday, falling 5-0 to the hosts before defeating the Minneapolis Angels 11-1 in five innings.

Brookings (7-5) plays at Marshall, Minnesota, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Chris Fellows tossed an 11-hit shutout to lead the home team. He struck out two batters without issuing a free pass.

Carter Roach went 3-for-3 for the Cubs. Jared Tschetter, Ty Schneider and Nick Ross added two hits apiece.

Mike Holen took the loss on the mound after allowing four runs on six hits and a walk in four innings. Nathan Kirby surrendered one run on three hits with a strikeout and a walk over the final two frames.

The Aces’ Jeff Peterson led off the bottom of the first with a single and Josh Cunningham singled with one away. Jordan Olson’s two-out hit got Atwater on the board. All three players finished 2-for-3.

In the second, Noah Cunningham drew a base on balls, moved to second on Nate Ewert’s sacrifice, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on David Kingery’s single to make it 2-0.

Fellows doubled to open the fourth and Noah Cunningham singled. Ewert dropped down a bunt, plating Fellows and moving Noah Cunningham to third. Peterson’s sacrifice fly pushed the margin to 4-0.

Josh Cunningham singled to get the fifth frame going. Olson doubled with one out for his second RBI of the game.

 Brookings 11, Minneapolis Angels 1 (5 inn.)

Curt Anderson threw a two-hitter and Schneider and Austin Koenig both drove in three runs for the Cubs. Brookings scored eight times in the third inning.

Anderson struck out four and walked three. The Angels’ lone run was unearned.

The Cubs got things going with three runs in the second.

Sam McMacken singled and Roach did the same with one away. Tschetter had an RBI single, before Koenig came through with a two-run hit with two away.

The Angels’ Danny Miller drew a two-out walk in the top of the third. Taylor Branstad, who had both his team’s hits, followed with a single. Kipp Youngquist hit a grounder, and an error on the play allowed Miller to scamper home.

Brookings countered with eight runs in the bottom of the inning.

Schneider was hit by a pitch and Jeff Fish, who went 2-for-3, singled. Jacolby Anderson was hit by a pitch with one away to load the bases.

Roach’s sacrifice fly plated Schneider. Tschetter walked to reload the bases. David Thomas had an RBI single. Koenig and Noel Burgos were hit by pitches to force in Jacolby Anderson and Tschetter.

Schneider then stepped up with a three-run double. Fish’s RBI two-bagger provided for the final margin.

Minneapolis’ Colin Spellman took the loss after giving up 11 runs – 10 earned – on eight hits with a strikeout and a walk in 2 2/3 innings.
