RAPID CITY – Brookings junior Jonah Dobbs and senior Dalton Rittershaus defeated Aberdeen Central’s Jesse Margolies and Andrew Hartze 11-10 (4) in the Flight 1 singles ninth-place match as the State Boys’ Tennis Tournament concluded Saturday.

They beat Aberdeen Roncalli’s Isaiah Vilhauer and Lucas Goetz 8-4 in the consolation quarterfinals and Rapid City Christian’s Noah Christensen and David Greni 8-4 in the semis.

In Flight 2, Micah Ardry and Dawson Peters dropped Huron’s Tyrese Theus and Roger Puterbaugh 8-4 in the second round of consolation action and Watertown’s Drew Veflin and Dawson Tschakert 8-6 in the quarterfinals. They fell 8-1 to Harrisburg’s Cole Van Holland and Karter Lein in the semis.

The Bobcats ended up in a tie for 12th in the team standings with 138 points.

Sioux Falls Lincoln matched its own state record by winning the state title a fifth consecutive time. The Patriots also accomplished the feat between 1995-99.

Lincoln now has 17 crowns since boys’ tennis was sanctioned in 1971, adding wins in the inaugural year, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1991, 2002 and 2004. The Patriots were second in 1992, 1993 and 1994.

Three individuals – including Flight 1 singles champion Sam Dobbs, a Patriot – and one doubles team capped perfect seasons with state championships.

Dobbs, a junior, defeated Roosevelt’s Spencer Smith 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-3 in the final. He went 27-0 and only dropped one set this season.

Stevens sophomore Dawson Segrist (31-0) won the Flight 5 title and Lincoln freshman Gavin Schmit (25-0) prevailed in Flight 6.

In doubles, the Aberdeen Roncalli duo of senior Colton Hellwig and Spencer Titus concluded a 21-0 campaign by finishing on top in Flight 3.
