Cossacks win 12th cheer title in a row in record fashion

BRANDON – Sioux Valley punctuated the dynasty’s 12th consecutive title with a monumental performance on Friday night at the Class A State Competitive Cheer Competition.

The Cossacks earned an incredible 290.5 – 96.5 from a pair of judges and a 97.5 from the other – to run away with the victory. They didn’t have any deductions.

“The team had a phenomenal performance,” said head coach Casie King. “I believe it was the best we have ever competed at state, and the team and I were extremely happy ending our season on that performance.”

In fact, it was the best any team has every performed at state, regardless of class, as the 290.5 is a record score at a state competition.

The previous mark was 275 by Class AA member Sioux Falls Roosevelt at the 2014 competition. The Cossacks’ previous best was a 261, achieved a year ago.

“We had seven seniors close out their high school careers tonight and I don’t think they could have asked for anything more,” King added. “We scored a 290.5, which is the highest in my coaching career.”

The team’s seniors are Baylee Bezdichek, Sara Duncan, Caley Gruntmeir, Cheyanne Kamps, Dani Seibel, Ashlyn Spilde and Lauren Taylor.

Sioux Valley has taken home the first-place hardware every year since the sport was sanctioned by the SDHSAA for the 2007-08 school year.

“Taking home our 12th win is very rewarding,” said King, who has been at the helm for all the titles. “We never take anything for granted and make sure to work every day like we’ve never won. The team holds each other to high standards and I think it shows on the floor. Even at the many morning practices, the team pushes to be the best and never allows less than that.

“It’s a lot of pressure to have consecutive wins, but the future of Sioux Valley looks bright.”

Dakota Valley was runner-up with a score of 246 and Dell Rapids (240) took third.

Deubrook Area won the small group title with a 227 as the second-year program placed fourth in the overall standings.

Defending small group champion Arlington/Lake Preston had a 194 and took sixth in small group and 13th overall.

Dakota Valley won its ninth straight dance title with a score of 282.5. The Panthers took first in pom (287), kick (283.5) and jazz (277).

Platte-Geddes was second overall at 222.33. They won hip hop (219).
