BROOKINGS – The storm Monday night didn’t cause many accidents in Brookings, according to Lt. Derrick Powers of the Brookings Police, but resulted in a few more in the county, said Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring of the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

There were four accidents reported in the city between 5:20 and 6:30 p.m. Monday, the height of the storm, Powers said.

“They’re all non-injury accidents,” he added. “Nothing too serious.”

Sebring said his office responded to around 11 accidents.

“Not all of them were state reportable accidents. Some were what we just call slide-ins, which means they just slid into the ditch (and) didn’t damage their vehicle or any other property,” he wrote in an e-mail.

Powers wasn’t sure what the reason was for the low number of accidents.

“There were still people out and about. Just the visibility had people slowing down, too,” he said.
