If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from 12:30-4 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

Feeding Brookings grocery distribution is held from 4-5 p.m. every Thursday at Ascension Lutheran Church, 2030 Third St. To donate, volunteer or for more information, log onto www.feedingbrookings.org.

Downtown at Sundown is a free music series held from 5-9 p.m. every Thursday in the 300 block of Fifth Street. It features free admission, free kids’ activities, cold drinks and local food. Come close out the 2019 season with headliner the Nathan Dean Band. This four-piece band from Arizona brings a lot of passion to the stage with a mix of classic country roots, original songs and rock and roll.

The Brookings County Democrats will introduce Paula Hawks and Stacey Burnette, new state party leaders, at their annual picnic starting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Community Life Center corner of Sixth Street and Seventh Avenue. Bring a dish to pass and join other Democrats for good food, good conversation, door prizes and a Democratic presidential straw poll.

Friday, Aug. 23

New student move-in day at South Dakota State University starts at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23. Welcome events on campus that evening include a Welcome Picnic at 5 p.m. west of the University Student Union (families welcome), a Jackrabbit Block Party at 6 p.m. on Larson Green, and an SDSU Wellness Center Extravaganza and Dance from 7 p.m.-midnight, with games and inflatables.

The first day of classes for most students in the Brookings School District is Friday, Aug. 23. The first day of classes for Mickelson Middle School students is Sept. 4.

The Brookings Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 24, in the 300 block of Sixth Avenue, between the Brookings Public Library and the Brookings County Courthouse.

Brookings Bonanza 2019 will be held from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Brookings Farmers Market for a fun morning of play, biking, local food and historic tours. Guided walk and roll tours with the Historic Preservation Commission are at 9:30 a.m., of the Commercial Historic District, and at 10:30 a.m., of the Central Residential District. The Bicycle Advisory Committee will host a 10-mile bike ride starting at 10 a.m. The Brookings Sustainability Council and Public Arts Commission will hand out giveaways while the Brookings Arts Council offers free face painting.

Day 2 of move-in weekend at South Dakota State University is packed full of activities for students. Convocation, with a welcome from SDSU President Barry Dunn and deans, and a picnic are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Frost Arena. That’s followed by ThumpStart, a reintroduction to academic advising and resources, student accounts and services, and campus tours. At 7 p.m. is the Campanile Climb. The first 100 students to make it all 179 steps to the top get free SDSU ice cream. The Welcome Back Bash, featuring a foam drop dance, is from 8-11 p.m. in the Jackrabbit Village Plaza.

The Lynn Mennis Memorial Scholarship Beanbag Tournament is set for Saturday, Aug. 24, at The Wild Hare, 303 Third St., Brookings. Registration is at 11 a.m., and shotgun start is at noon. Cost is $50 per two-person team; must be 18 or older to participate. Proceeds will go to students who are planning to go into the building trades and work in South Dakota.

The Brookings High School Marching Band fall preview show and taco feed will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at the BHS Athletic Complex (track field). The meal costs $7 and includes a marching taco and fixings, drink and cookie, and the performance starts at 12:30 p.m. All are welcome.

Midwest Maidens Roller Derby presents Caturday Night Fever, its second home bout of 2019, against the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz, starting at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Swiftel Center. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors, military and public servants. Kids 10 and younger get in free. Doors open at 5 p.m.

The South Dakota state parks are inviting families to enjoy the outdoors in celebration of the first National TRACK Trails Day on Aug. 24. The day is part of a celebration of the Kids in Parks program’s 10-year anniversary. Lake Poinsett Recreation Area will host an Introduction to Disc Golf starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. Oakwood Lakes State Park will host a Scout Island Hike starting at 7 p.m. A park entrance license is required to participate in each event.

Sunday, Aug. 25

The Brookings County Museum in Volga’s City Park is open 1-4 p.m. daily, seven days a week.

Kicks for Kort, an epilepsy awareness kickball tournament, will start at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25, at Camelot Intermediate School. This is a family friendly event to celebrate Kort Henderson, who was first diagnosed in 2015. Show up, teams will be divided, and fun will be had. Monday, Aug. 26

Delta Dental’s mobile dental truck is coming to Brookings during the week of Aug. 26. The truck will be parked at the Brookings Area United Way in Brookings at 619 Fifth Ave. Brookings Area United Way is hosting the truck to care for children who can’t afford or access a dentist because of cost, lack of insurance, transportation, or other reasons. Children from their first tooth through age 21 are eligible. Registration in advance is needed, and a patient consent and information form must be completed. To make an appointment, call 211. Feeding South Dakota will provide free food for families in need at its next mobile food distribution from 10:15-11:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at the Volga Community Center, 109 Samara Ave. Food distributions provide an assortment of food that may include frozen and fresh produce, frozen meats, assorted breads and/or canned and boxed items. Please bring something to carry your food in, such as coolers, bags or totes.

Get messy with Brookings Area MOPS at the organization’s free kickoff event from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at Bethel Baptist Church, 714 17th Ave. S. Your kids will enjoy all sorts of messy play, and MOPS will do the cleanup. Meanwhile, you’ll connect with other moms and learn about what to expect during the year with MOPS. All moms with kids from conception to kindergarten are welcome.

Brookings Police and Fire departments will partner up to save lives at the Heroes Behind the Badges Blood Drive held from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 3-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Brookings Hy-Vee, 790 22nd Ave. S. The departments will be competing to see who can recruit the most blood donors to boost the summer blood supply for Brookings Health System. All donors will receive a special t-shirt and a free lunch. The department credited with the most blood donations will receive a trophy and bragging rights for a year.
