The City Surplus Bicycle Auction starts at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Brookings Law Enforcement Center west parking lot, 307 Third Ave.

The next Adult Craft Night at the Brookings Public Library starts at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Cooper Room. Participants this month will make paperback pumpkins. Registration is required for the free event; call the library at 692-9407 or stop by to sign up.

The first Family Science Night of the fall will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Children’s Activity Room at the Brookings Public Library. The event features a variety of hands-on activities for families to explore together.

Brookings Health System is launching Joint Camp, a free, 60-minute educational session for individuals in the community who are having, or are thinking about, knee or hip joint replacements. Initial sessions will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 25, Oct. 30, Nov. 27 and Dec. 18 at Brookings Hospital, Conference Room A.

SDSU associate professor Christine Garst-Santos will receive the sixth-annual J.P. Hendrickson Liberal Arts Faculty Scholar Award and deliver the Herbert Cheever Jr. Liberal Arts Lecture, “#RapeCultureIsWhen: 17th Century Spanish Literature Speaks to Our Me Too Movement.” The award presentation and lecture, sponsored by SDSU’s College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, are scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Volstorff Ballroom of the University Student Union on the SDSU campus.

Wednesday, Sept. 26

1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

Elkton United Parish will host a ham supper and country store from 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 710 Cornell, in the southwest corner of Elkton. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for youth 5-12 years old. The menu includes ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, coleslaw, cranberry salad, corn, seasoned green beans, buns and homemade pies.

Bingo at the Brookings VFW, 520 Main Ave., is from 6:30-10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26. Cards are handed out at 6:30, and bingo starts at 7. Lunch will be available. For more information, call 692-6771.

Thursday, Sept. 27

Four local employers will share best practices in hiring students at the September Bacon & Business workshop series Thursday, Sept. 27, at McCrory Gardens Education & Visitor Center. Breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. and the panel discussion begins at 8 a.m. Tickets are $15 each. Registration is through the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce www.brookingschamber.org or by emailing info@brookingschamber.org.

If you love to paint, join the painting group that meets from noon-5 p.m. every Thursday at the Brookings Arts Council, 524 Fourth St. Come work on individual projects and collaborate on art talk and ideas. No pre-registration is needed.

Bill Paloski, director of NASA’s Human Research Program, will discuss what a future Mars mission might look like and some of the challenges that must be overcome to maintain the health and performance of crew members aboard such missions at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, on the South Dakota State University campus. The 47th annual Brookings Ducks Unlimited Banquet is set for Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Days Inn. Raffles and games open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner is at 7 p.m., followed by a live auction. Tickets are available in advance at Gas ‘N Mor and at the door the night of the event and cost $50 for membership and dinner, $20 for a spouse/guest, and $10 for a Greenwing.

Brookings PFLAG will read and discuss several children’s books that have themes dealing with LGBTQ family members at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, at the Brookings Public Library. PFLAG is a support group for family and friends of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender individuals. The meeting is open to the public.

An opportunity to continue discussion from Dr. Bart Ehrman’s recent public lecture at the Performing Arts Center will be held from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in the Student Union, upper level Crest Room. James Murphy, SDSU’s own specialist in biblical studies, will be available to field further audience comments and questions and discuss biblical scholarship in general. The event is open to all and is sponsored by the Department of History, Political Science, Philosophy & Religion and the Philosophy Club.

SDSU senior Sam Ulrich, a music education major from Sioux Falls, will hold a clarinet recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in the Peterson Recital Hall in the Lincoln Music Hall on campus. Friday, Sept. 28

The 81st annual South Dakota Sheep Growers Association Convention will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28-29, at the Days Inn & Convention Center, 2500 Sixth St., Brookings. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged for planning purposes, but on-site registration is available.

The Brookings High School Class of 1973 will hold its 45th class reunion on Sept. 29 at the Old Market Eatery. The event is casual and will begin at 5:30 p.m. The plans include lots of visiting, sharing memories and hors d’oeuvres. Past educators of the BHS Class of 1973 are invited.

Area residents are invited to meet at the corner of Fifth Street and Main Avenue by 6 p.m. on Friday, Sep 28, for Brookings Critical Mass’s monthly bicycle ride. All are welcome. Afterwards, participants will eat together downtown.

The Shepherd’s Shuffle 5K and 1-mile walk start at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Research Park at SDSU. The course goes through the McCrory Gardens arboretum with all proceeds benefiting “The Shepherd’s Gift: GM1 for HD” Huntington’s disease research.

First United Methodist Church of Brookings will host a turkey dinner from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at its Community Life Center, 625 Fifth St. The menu includes turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet corn, pickled beets, cranberry salad, dinner rolls, assorted pies, and coffee and juice. Cost is $10 for those 12 years and older, and $3 for children 4-11 years old. Call the church office at 692-4345 for advance tickets and information.

A Cancer Shoot-Out will be held from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at the Brookings Gun Club, 2 miles east of Brookings on Highway 14. Bring the family to sample outdoor activities such as trap, skeet, archery and yard games. Bring your own equipment, or equipment will be available to use. Free-will donations will be accepted, with proceeds going to Relay for Life.

The 19th annual St. Paul’s Wild Game Feed will be held Sunday, Sept. 30, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Sixth Street and Eighth Avenue. Tickets cost $20 in advance for one of two serving times: 5-6:30 p.m. or 7-8:30 p.m., and are available at Threads of Memories, 411 Fourth St., 697-7377. Reservations are required.
