1 Million Cups, a way for creators, artists, entrepreneurs and business owners to gather and share ideas on upcoming projects or new products, will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Children’s Museum of South Dakota. Free coffee will be served.

The Friends of the Library fall book sale is set for Wednesday through Sunday, Oct. 17-21, in the Brookings Public Library Cooper Room. On Wednesday is a Friends-only presale from 6-8:30 p.m. Friends of the Library memberships will be available for sale at the door.

League of Women Voters of South Dakota is hosting an educational forum on legislative redistricting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center on campus. SDSU political science professor Lisa Hager will speak on gerrymandering at “Will Your Vote Count?” All are welcome.

Thursday, Oct. 18

Anyone in need is welcome to the Share the Warmth event, held from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Faith Reformed Church, 1330 Main Ave. S., Brookings. Come pick up a coat, snow pants, boots, hat and gloves. Recipients are asked to come on a schedule based on the first letter of their last name: M-P, 9-11 a.m.; Q-S, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; T-Z, 1-3 p.m.; A-D, 3-5 p.m.; E-H, 5-7 p.m.; I-L, 7-8 p.m.

A reception for SDSU’s Studio Art and Graphic Design Faculty Exhibition will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Ritz Gallery of Grove Hall. The reception is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served.

The Brookings Interfaith Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Islamic Society of Brookings, 724 11th Ave. A potluck meal will be followed by a broad-ranging discussion regarding “spiritual but not religious.” All are welcome. If possible, bring a dish to pass.

The Methodist Church in White will host the White Christmas Fair from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. Everyone is welcome to come purchase attic treasures, crafts, produce, baked items and jelly. Dessert and coffee will be served starting at 8:30 a.m., and soup and sandwiches starting at 11 a.m.

SDSU Archives and Special Collections will host DIY Scan Day from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in Room 241 (third floor) of Hilton M. Briggs Library. Bring your personal history – photos, letters, diaries, family histories, service records, and any other historic and/or sentimental document – to SDSU Archives, and they’ll help you create a digital copy to preserve it for the future.

The seventh annual Star Wars Reads Day will be held from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Brookings Public Library. The event will feature food, activities, photo opportunities, special guests and books. Costumes are welcome and encouraged.

Sunday, Oct. 21

The Brookings VFW Auxiliary invites the community to a Sunday brunch from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 21 at the VFW post home, 520 Main Ave.

The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, toast, coffee and juice for $7. The works includes the above breakfast with a separate plate of biscuits and gravy for $9. Children ages 3 to 7 eat for $4, and 2 and under are free. Proceeds from the breakfast this month will go to the Rolling Thunder Chapter 2 South Dakota. For more information, call 692-6771.

McCrory Gardens will host its Fall Festival from noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21. Take a tour through the gardens with Puppet Fred at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., then show off your creative skills with pumpkin decorating. Price is $5 per pumpkin.

SDSU senior Candace Pedersen, a music education major from Corpus Christi, Texas, will hold a trumpet recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in the Peterson Recital Hall in the Lincoln Music Hall on campus. The event is free and open to the public.

The Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program will hold a New Mentor Training from 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at GracePoint Wesleyan Church, 1420 Orchard Drive. 

Attendees will learn more about BCYMP, fill out an application and complete necessary training to become a volunteer BCYMP mentor. Dinner is provided.

The public is invited to attend a diversity potluck and food drive from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at the McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center. Come eat and learn about Brookings’ 2018 Municipal Equality Index score, presented by Lawrence Novotny of the Brookings Human Rights Commission.

Those attending are asked to bring a food item (hotdish, salad, bread or dessert) that is representative of their heritage. Table service, chicken, coffee, punch and water will be provided. Attendees are also asked to bring a nonperishable donation for the food pantry.

Russ Melchert, dean of the School of Pharmacy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, will speak on “Curiosity, Creativity and Career Contentment” at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in SDSU’s Volstorff Ballroom. The Keo Glidden Smith Fall Pharmacy Convocation also includes a research poster presentation from 1-3 p.m.

SDSU Associate Professor Tammy Yonce will premiere two works during her faculty flute recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in the Peterson Recital Hall on campus. Pianist John Walker will accompany Yonce onstage. The performance is free and open to the public.
