Firefighters douse tractor blaze near Volga

The Volga Fire Department extinguished a tractor fire at a rural farm place near Volga on Tuesday afternoon.

According to a news release from Brooking County Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring, units from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, Volga Fire Department and South Dakota Highway Patrol responded to a reported tractor fire at a residence on 464th Avenue, north of U.S. Highway 14, shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The Volga Fire Department was able to put out the fire before it spread to any surrounding buildings.

The tractor was a Versatile Ford valued at $35,000 and was likely a total loss, Sebring said.

The fire crew battled strong winds but were able to stop the fire before it spread without any injuries.

“The Volga Fire Department did a great job,” Sebring said. “I think we were all worried about it spreading with the outbuildings and feed and all the stuff around. And it’s always tough when the wind is blowing like that.”

The cause of the fire was reported as likely to be a faulty electric battery heater.
