Firefighters extinguish pair of blazes in Volga

Local first responders put out two fires in just over an hour in Volga on Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 4:55 p.m., crews from the sheriff’s office and the Volga Fire Department responded to the 200 block of U.S. Highway 14 for a call of a car on fire. They found a 2011 GMC Acadia burning between two homes.

Crews were quickly able to extinguish the fire. Estimated damage to the Acadia and the owner’s residence was $1,000 and damage to the neighboring residence was also estimated at $1,000.

Shortly thereafter, at 6:05 p.m., crews responded to a fire in a field north of Fifth Street near Asher Avenue.

A New Holland tractor was being used to unload hay bales when the operator noticed smoke and fire coming from under the tractor and called authorities, who were once again quickly able to put out the blaze.

Total damage to the tractor was unknown.

Both incidents remain under investigation by the sheriff’s office.
