SIOUX FALLS – Flandreau’s Michael Witte advanced to the consolation third round and clinched a top-eight finish in the 145-pound weight during the Class B State Wrestling Tournament on Friday at the PREMIER Center.
The senior improved his season record to 36-9.
Witte picked up a 7-2 decision over Custer/Edgemont’s Eli Mines in the first round.
After dropping a 2-1 decision to Hot Springs’ Kody Hagen in the quarterfinals, Witte recorded a 9-0 major decision over Mobridge-Pollock’s Tucson Freeman in the second round of consolation action.
At 106, Caleb Dietrich got pinned by Parkston’s Riley Weber to open the tourney but bounced back by pinning Mobridge-Pollock’s Isaac Aman in 2:47 in his first consolation bout. He was eliminated by Custer/ Edgemont’s Jestyn Woodward after that, dropping a 10-1 major decision.
Hunter Witte ended up 0-2 at 113, falling in 2:43 versus Howard’s Kieffer Klinkhammer and in 30 seconds against Groton Area’s Dragr Monson.
Preston Keith finished 0-2 at 160, falling in 1:04 to Canton’s Shaeden Scheidt and then dropping a 6-2 decision to St. Thomas More’s Stone Durham.
For Kingsbury County, Alec Dobson (120 pounds) and Gavin Holland (152) both finished with 1-2 marks.
Dobs lost 8-4 to Kimball/White Lake/Platte Geddes’ Wyatt Talbott, pinned Tri-Valley Carson Norgaard in 3:45, but was pinned by Sisseton’s Dane Christopherson in 59 seconds.
Elk Point-Jefferson’s Ethan Marx tallied a 6-4 sudden victory over Holland in the first round. Holland beat KWLPG’s Levi Nightingale 5-1 in his first consolation match but was eliminated by Bon Homme/Scotland/ Avon’s Dom Pechous, who won by fall in 3:18.
Connor Hoffman went 0-2 in the 195-pound weight class, getting pinned by Redfield’s Cooper Baloun in 1:42 and Garretson’s Keaten Wagner in 1:16.
Canton tops the team standings with 79 points, while Howard (58) is second and Winner (57.5) third.
Flandreau (8) is 33rd and Kingsbury County (4) sits in a tie for 35th.
The tourney concludes today, with action getting underway at 10 a.m.
