Fliers, Warriors, Hawks, Dolphins prevail

FLANDREAU – Dylan LeBrun opened his senior season with another big game as the Fliers handled Chester Area, 70-46, in a Big East Conference boys’ basketball matchup Friday night.

LeBrun posted a double-double of 32 points and 21 rebounds while adding four steals and three assists.

Grady Gullickson had 11 points and eight boards. Nate Kneebone added 11 points and five rebounds.

The Flyers’ Devin Eppard totaled 19 markers.

Chester plays host to Garretson today. Flandreau is host to Hamlin on Tuesday.

 Castlewood 63, Colman-Egan 53

COLMAN – The Warriors outscored the Hawks 24-15 in the fourth quarter to upend the reigning Dakota Valley Conference champions in a season-opening boys’ basketball game Friday night.

Colman-Egan led 18-12 after a quarter and 28-25 at halftime, before Castlewood moved ahead 39-38 through three.

Caleb DeKam scored a game-high 18 points in the win. He added six rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Kaden Eng contributed 14 points. Brandon Benike added 11 points and six boards. Kyler Tvedt also had 11 points.

Both teams shot 42 percent (21-of-50) from the floor.

Dalton Voelker paced the Hawks with 16 points, eight rebounds and two assists.

Chandler Gullickson had 14 points and five boards. Bodee Groos added 13 points, four assists and two steals. Kade Groos dished out five assists.

Castlewood heads to Elkton-Lake Benton on Monday. Colman-Egan faces Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Friday in Rutland.

 Arlington 70, Elkton-Lake Benton 57

ELKTON – Will Parry scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Cardinals past the Elks in a DVC contest.

Arlington led 16-9 after a quarter, 38-28 at halftime and 54-38 through three.

Devon Heuer added 17 points and Casey Stegeman 11.

ELB’s Grant DeRuyter and Matthew Nibbe both had 14 points. DeRuyter dished out four assists.

Marcus Harming added 10 points and six boards. Devin Sopko had six boards and three steals.

Elkton-Lake Benton is host to Castlewood on Monday. Arlington travels to De Smet on Friday.

 De Smet 65, Lake Preston 41

DE SMET – Gage Gruenhagen poured in 33 points and the Bulldogs overcame a slow start to pick up the convincing DVC victory.

The Divers led 11-8 after a quarter. De Smet moved ahead 30-23 at halftime and were up 49-32 heading to the fourth.

Gruenhagen went 13-of-24 from the field and added nine rebounds. Ethan McCune scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting.

Lake Preston’s Jack Hasche had 22 points and eight boards. Jasper Dennison chipped in with 10 markers.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday as Lake Preston heads to Wolsey-Wessington and De Smet faces Clark/Willow Lake in Willow Lake.

 Deubrook Area 60, Estelline 43

ESTELLINE – The Dolphins built an 18-2 lead after a quarter en route to a 60-43 Dakota Valley Conference season-opening win over the host Redmen.

Trailing by 16 after the first eight minutes, Estelline played nearly even with the visitors the rest of the way as Deubrook led 33-15 at half and 44-29 after three.

Jack Bandemer scored 27 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Dolphins, 1-0. Clayton Koppatschek added 10 points and five boards while Cody Bauman contributed nine points, six rebounds and six assists.

Gonzalo Gutierrez’ 18 points led the Redmen, 0-1. Davon Dahl, Zach Loomis and Spencer Lutz chipped in with six points apiece.

Deubrook travels to Baltic today while Estelline plays host to Dell Rapids St. Mary on Friday.
