Grass fire burns acre at Nature Park

BROOKINGS – A grass fire at the Dakota Nature Park over the weekend appears to be “man-caused,” according to Brookings Fire Chief Darrell Hartmann.

The Brookings Fire Department was called out at 6:19 p.m. Saturday, and the grass fire was on the hill in the Nature Park, he said, adding just under an acre burned and it was all grass.

“We really didn’t know what we had until we got there,” Hartmann said.

The fire department brought three brush trucks, one tender, a couple of engines and about 30 personnel, he said.

“Access was a little tough, but they got in there and knocked it out,” Hartmann said,

There were no injuries and crews were on scene until 7:05 p.m.

“It appears to be man-caused. It’s under investigation at this point,” Hartmann said.
