Hawks, Raiders open season with DVC victories

COLMAN – Two-time reigning state champion Colman-Egan opened the season with a 36-0 victory over Elkton-Lake Benton during Dakota Valley Conference football action Friday night.

The Hawks – the Class 9A champions in 2016 and the 9B winners in 2017 – pushed their winning streak to 20 games.

Colman-Egan outgained ELB 245-49 in rushing yards and totaled 20 first downs.

Eli Bowen got things going with a 37-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter. Nate Tolley kicked the PAT.

Tolley found Chase Hemmer for a 12-yard scoring toss later in the first. Ryker Hawkins’ 6-yard TD rush and Tolley’s PAT made it 20-0 after a period.

Dalton Voelker broke through the Elks’ offensive line for a sack, which resulted in a safety, in the second. Bowen contributed a 6-yard scoring scamper as Colman-Egan opened up a 28-0 advantage heading to halftime.

Hemmer tacked on a 2-yard TD plunge in the third. His two-point conversion run provided for the final margin.

Hemmer had 66 yards on six rushes and 57 yards on three receptions. Bowen picked up 108 yards on the ground. Tolley was 3-of-10 for 57 yards.

Voelker ended up with four tackles, including two sacks. Ty Hiller also recorded a pair of sacks. Bowen made six stops and Tolley had a pair to go with an interception.

The Elks’ Devin Sopko ran for 33 yards and Grant DeRuyter added 22. Matthew Nibbe was 1-of-6 for 14 yards with an INT through the air. Sopko had a 14-yard catch.

Sopko paced the defense with 10 tackles, DeRuyter and Noah Greer both added six, and Taryn Krog had five.

Elkton-Lake Benton plays host to Oldham-Ramona/Rutland next week. Colman-Egan has an open week, before playing host to Dell Rapids St. Mary on Friday, Aug. 31.

RAMONA – Six different Raiders found the end zone as ORR opened the season with a shutout victory over a DVC opponent.

Taylor Hojer scored a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Casey Renaas ran for 69 yards and Brandon Trygstad added 59 as both players scored a TD. Trygstad was also 11-of-17 for 72 yards with two TDs and an INT.

Will Matson tallied two catches for 63 yards and a TD while adding a 26-yard scoring toss.

Luis Esquivel and Wyatt Bickett both added a touchdown catch.

Orion Albertson picked up 52 yards as the Raiders racked up 230 yards on the ground.

Daniel Jaton made 11 tackles and recovered a fumble. Esquivel and Isaac Hegdahl both picked off a pass, and Carter Wicks added a fumble recovery.

ORR heads to Elkton-Lake Benton and Estelline/Hendricks plays at Dell Rapids St. Mary on Friday.

 Arlington/Lake Preston 50, Dell Rapids St. Mary 12

DELL RAPIDS – The Badgers handled the Cardinals in the season-opening DVC matchup.

Arlington/Lake Preston plays host to De Smet in Lake Preston and DRSM is host to Estelline/Hendricks on Friday.

 McCook Central/Montrose 7, Flandreau 6

SALEM – Blake Gessner scored a touchdown with 1:29 remaining in the game as the Fighting Cougars edged the Fliers in a season-opening Big East Conference game.

Gessner found the end zone on a 2-yard plunge. Parker Scheier’s PAT kick proved to be the difference.

Flandreau led for much of the game as Matthew Pauley scampered to paydirt from 26 yards out less than 2 minutes in.

MCM outgained Flandreau 243-110 in total yards of offense, including a 212-62 advantage on the ground.

Gessner picked up 84 yards on 15 rushes. Jacobi Krouse added 61 yards. Raygen Randall was 3-of-16 for 31 yards with an interception through the air.

Kolton Lindstrom paced the defense with eight tackles.

For the Fliers, Pauley totaled 68 yards on 18 attempts. Tanner Christenson went 6-of-16 for 48 yards with two INTs. Connor LeBrun had two receptions covering 39 yards.

Pauley totaled eight tackles and LeBrun notched seven to go with a pick.

Flandreau is open next week before heading to Elk Point-Jefferson on Friday, Aug. 31. MCM plays host to EPJ on Friday.
