Jackrabbits upend No. 23 NC State, 75-67, in Florida

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The South Dakota State women’s basketball team opened the game on an 11-1 run and recorded a 75-67 victory over No. 23 North Carolina State during Friday afternoon action in the Puerto Rico Clasico at Cardinal Gibbons Arena.

The Jackrabbits, now 4-1, were led by freshman Myah Selland, who hit a career-high four 3-pointers on her way to scoring a career-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

Madison Guebert tallied a season-best 20 points, sinking three treys. Macy Miller added 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

NC State, ranked No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches poll and now 6-1, had four players scoring in double digits. Kaila Ealey had a team-high 16 points.

The last time the Jackrabbits beat a ranked team was against No. 19 Miami in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament in Stanford, Calif., on March 19. 2016. SDSU is now 6-19 all-time against ranked opponents.

Selland scored the Jackrabbits’ first 11 points of the game, going 3-for-3 from long range and scoring on a layup with 5:53 to play. SDSU limited the Wolfpack to one field goal in the first 12 minutes of the game. SDSU finished the quarter with five 3-pointers.

Guebert opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer before the Wolfpack used an 8-0 run to pull within five points, 22-17, at 6:36. Miller then scored eight of the Jackrabbits’ final 11 points of the quarter to give South Dakota State a 33-25 lead at halftime.

The Jackrabbits’ largest lead of the game came with 2:52 left in the third quarter when Miller and Guebert combined for 7-0 run to put SDSU up 48-32. After NC State cut the lead to nine points, 50-41, Sydney Palmer sank a 3-pointer to close the third quarter for the second consecutive game for a 53-41 lead.

NC State used a 12-3 spurt in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 62-57 with 2:50 remaining. After a layup by Tagyn Larson, the Jackrabbits sank 11 of 12 free throws for the win.

Notes: NC State came into the game outscoring opponents 198-98 in the paint. The Jackrabbits outscored the Wolfpack, 22-18. ... SDSU sank 12 3-pointers against NC State, marking the fifth consecutive game with 10-or-more treys. ... Miller now has 1,199 career points, Thompson 1,022 and Guebert 915.
