Jacob Schoon advances to semifinals in Class A state tourney

SIOUX FALLS – Bobcat junior Jacob Schoon breezed into the semifinals at the Class A State Wrestling Tournament on Friday at the PREMIER Center.

The 170-pounder pinned West Central’s Kadyn Nolz in 3:22 and then won by fall in 1:37 versus Yankton’s Owen Warren in the quarterfinals.

Schoon (28-1) faces Harrisburg senior Nick Schirado (37-4) in the semis today. On the other side of the 170-pound bracket, Rapid City Central senior Kolby Kost (38-1) takes on Sioux Falls O’Gorman senior Zach Witte (38-7).

Schoon ensured himself a spot on the podium for the fourth consecutive season. He took fourth at 170 as a sophomore after finishing as the 160-pound runner-up as a freshman and ending up eighth at 138 as an eighth-grader.

Four other Brookings wrestlers – Nolan Archer (106 pounds), Connor Klinkhammer (113), Logan Bowes (160) and Gus Miller (220) – clinched top-eight finishes by advancing to the consolation third round.

Archer pinned Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Alex Mentzer in the first round. He fell 10-5 to Sturgis’ Jacob Wood in the quarterfinals but beat Dell Rapids’ Jacob Vogel 10-5 in a second-round consolation bout.

Klinkhammer also opened with a victory, notching a 13-0 major decision against Harrisburg’s Ryan Hirschkorn. He bounced back from a 5-0 quarterfinal loss to Sturgis’ Tristan Permann with a 15-0 technical fall in 3:47 over Spearfish’s Tristen Fierbach.

Bowes dropped Sturgis’ Jaren Puhlman 7-4 to get his tourney underway. He lost 5-0 to Aberdeen Central’s Collin Haar in the quarters but stayed alive with a 7-2 defeat of Rapid City Stevens’ Steele Fuegen in a consolation bout.

Sturgis’ Joel Carpenter pinned Miller in 1:26 in the rst round. Miller countered with a 5-0 win over Spearfish’s Marc Williams and then tallied a 2-1 tiebreaker-1 win over Watertown’s Lincoln Stahl.

Sam Lehman went 1-2 at 138 and was eliminated. He dropped a 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker to West Central’s Caden Ideker in the opening round. He had a 4-2 sudden victory-1 over Sturgis’ Austin Permann but then fell 3-1 (sudden victory-1) to Brandon Valley’s Kobi Terpstra.

Koby Bartels went 0-2 at 126, falling in 59 seconds to Rapid City Stevens’ Cody BeVier and in 1:22 to Rapid City Central’s Kadyn Kraye.

Tucker Christie dropped a pair of close decisions at 285 pounds, 3-2 to Rapid City Central’s Ty Olson and 5-2 to Dell Rapids’ Nick Palmer.

Rapid City Stevens leads the way with 88.5 team points, Pierre (85) is second and Sturgis (62) third.

Brookings is 14th with 31.5 points.

The tourney concludes today, with action getting underway at 10 a.m.
