King, Bender break school records; Burdick also wins

FARGO, N.D. – South Dakota State junior Rachel King successfully defended her title in the women’s 3,000-meter run at the Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at the Shelly Ellig Facility, finishing in a school-record time of 9 minutes, 28.16 seconds.

Colton Bender again broke his own school record in the men’s weight throw with a winning mark of 68 feet, 11 3/4 inches.

Kyle Burdick matched the first-place nish in the men’s 3,000, taking the crown with an 8:18.06 clocking. He led four Jackrabbits in the top eight in the event as Chase Cayo (8:28.67) finished sixth, Micah Mather (8:32.4) seventh and Gabe Peters (8:33.5) eighth.

Bryant Courter was runner-up in the men’s long jump with a mark of 24-5.

Derek Boekelheide, Sam Johnson, Josh Goehring and Sebastian Sowada teamed to place second in the distance medley relay in 10:13.15 – 1.46 seconds behind champion North Dakota State.

Trent Francom tied the school record in the pole vault, clearing 16-6 3/4 to place fourth. Daniel Clarke took eighth in the long jump (22-11 1/4).

On the women’s side, Vanessa Lane placed third in the pentathlon with 3,616 points. South Dakota’s Shanice Cannigan (4,106) and NDSU’s Amanda Levin (3,917) occupied the top two spots.

Lane was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.29 seconds), tied for fifth in the high jump (5- 1), second in the shot put (40- 11 3/4), fifth in the long jump (16-10 3/4) and fifth in the 800 (2:22.24).

Renae Dykstra, Allison Sebern, Jenni Scislow and Mamie Schweiss were third in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:10.76.

Abby Sudbeck ended up seventh in the weight throw with a heave of 61-1 1/2.

Through five events, North Dakota State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Oral Roberts and Western Illinois sit first through fifth, respectively, in the team standings in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
