BROOKINGS – Mail is being stolen in the Brookings area, and the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office deputies are looking for an older man they say is a suspect, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.

The thefts were reported at 11 a.m. Thursday.

“A rural Brookings resident reported that someone went through his mailbox and had opened mail and packages and had stolen some of the contents,” Sebring said.

“Within the last week, the Sheriff’s Office has had numerous reports of thefts of mail around rural Bruce, Volga, Brookings and Lake Campbell areas.”

The suspect is an older Caucasian man, possibly in his 60s to 70s, heavier set, with gray hair and driving a dark gray colored Chrysler minivan with paper plates, Sebring said. He is possibly acting under the guise of delivering newspapers or taking a survey and possibly carrying a clipboard.

Anyone with any information about this case can contact the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office at 605-696-8300 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously by visiting www.brookingsareacrimestoppers.com or by calling 605-692-STOP (7867).
