BROOKINGS – Jameson Meyer took a shutout into the seventh inning and the Bandit offense came alive late as Post 74 beat Huron 7-1 in a Legion baseball matchup Tuesday evening at Bob Shelden Field.
Meyer tossed a three-hitter, allowing one run with five strikeouts and a walk. He threw 86 pitches.
The right-hander lowered his ERA to 2.35 in 44 2/3 innings. He has a 4-2 record in eight appearances, including seven starts.
Tuesday marked Meyer’s fourth complete game of the season – he’s 4-0 with a 0.52 ERA in such outings.
Brookings put up two runs in the fifth and five in the sixth en route to pushing its home winning streak to four.
The Bandits’ Nos. 1-4 hitters went a combined 9-for-16 with six RBIs.
Leadoff Tyler Kreutner, who is batting .361, went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Brady Ammann, who doubled, and Rhett Zelinsky both finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Jacob Schoon also ended up 2-for-4.
In the fifth, Kreutner, Schoon, Zelinsky (RBI) and Ammann (RBI) had consecutive one-out singles to get the Bandits going.
Post 74 took advantage of a pair of errors – Christian Mediger and Ryan McMacken both reached – in the sixth. Tanner Shepardson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Kreutner stroked a two-run single up the middle to double the margin and chase Huron starter Walker Schlitz.
Zelinsky added an RBI hit with one away, before Ammann drove in a run with a double.
Parker Rykhus’ groundout plated Zelinsky to make it 7-0.
Meyer didn’t issue a walk until Jake Wehde drew a base on balls with two away in the seventh. He took second on defensive indifference and scored on Daynon Huber’s single for Post 7’s lone run.
Schlitz had a three-hit shutout through four frames before running into trouble. He gave up six runs – two earned – on eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk in five-plus innings.
Brookings (9-15) heads to Watertown for a doubleheader today at 5 p.m.
