BROOKINGS – It only took Macy Miller two shots and 38 seconds Friday night to become the all-time leading scorer for the South Dakota State women’s basketball program. Miller opened the game with back-to-back 3-point field goals to lead the Jackrabbits to a 97-49 win over Savannah State at Frost Arena.

Those two 3-point field goals allowed Miller to pass Shannon Schlagel’s total of 1,887 points. Miller finished with 21 points and now has 1,905 points.

South Dakota State improved to 7-4. Tylee Irwin led the Jacks with a career-high 22 points. Megan Bultsma added a career-high 10 points in a reserve role.

Savannah State (2-6) was led by Azhana Maxwell’s 15 points and six rebounds. Le’Andrea Gillis added 12 points.

Miller opened the game with a 3-point field goal, stole the inbounds pass and then took a pass from Madison Guebert before making her second 3-pointer.

“I didn’t think about it; the shots just came. I was open and my teammates found me,” Miller said. “As an athlete, you always set goals you want to accomplish. I’m blessed and thankful for the opportunity and it’s special to do it in front of your fans and in front of your family.”

Miller added a third 3-pointer as the Jackrabbits started with an 11-0 run. They eventually built a 34-12 lead at the end of the quarter. Miller scored 18 of her points in the quarter.

Irwin scored nine points early in the second quarter as South Dakota State opened a 49-15 lead. The Jacks closed the quarter on a 12-0 run for a 61-19 halftime lead as Irwin scored 15 points.

The teams traded baskets to open the second half before Miller converted a conventional three-point play with 3:24 left in the third quarter for a 73-30 lead. The Jacks led 77-30 after three.

Notes – Miller needs 95 points to become the first women’s player at State to reach the 2,000-point plateau. ... The senior also needs 373 points to finish her career as The Summit League’s all-time scoring leader, passing Oral Roberts’ Kevi Luper (2,277; 2009-12). Miller is seventh on the career list. ... Lindsey Theuninck scored a career-high nine points and Bultsma had a season-best seven rebounds.
