BROOKINGS – The Spring 2018 University Speakers Series at South Dakota State University opens Jan. 16 when A. James Murphy delivers the fifth-annual Herbert Cheever Jr. Liberal Arts Lecture at 7 p.m. in the University Student Union’s Volstorff Ballroom.
Murphy, an assistant professor of religion in the Department of History, Political Science, Philosophy and Religion, is also the recipient of the J.P. Hendrickson Faculty Scholar Award from the College of Arts and Sciences.
His lecture is “Standing, Kneeling, Respecting and Protesting: Liberal Arts Education and Clashes Over National Symbols.”
Vice President Emeritus of Research and Economic Development Kevin Kephart will present Jan. 18. Professor Emeritus of Soil Science Tom E. Schumacher will speak Feb. 1 while Marie-Pierre Caquot Baggett, a professor of French, will deliver the Victor K. Webster Lecture Feb. 22.
