AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore Kyle Burdick led the Jackrabbits at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships - West Preliminary on Thursday.
He took fourth in the first of four heats in the men’s 1,500-meter run to qualify for Saturday’s quarterfinals. He finished in 3 minutes, 59.35 seconds, which was good for 35th overall in the first round.
Despite tying for the 22nd fasted time – 1:51.36 – in the men’s 800-meter run, senior Alejandro Sanchez did not advance to the quarterfinals. He took fourth in his heat, missing an automatic bid to the quarters by 0.15 seconds
Freshman Oksana Covey took sixth in her heat of the women’s 800-meter run with a 2:10.09 clocking. She was 27th overall and missed the quarterfinals by less than a second.
Junior Colton Bender finished 34th in the men’s hammer throw with a mark of 198 feet, 1 inch.
Freshman Bryant Courter ended up 35th in the long jump at 24-1 3/4.
Senior Joel Reichow’s standout career ended with a 36th-place finish in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:24.26.
Senior Silvia Zanini was 42nd in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 177-7.
There are 48 participants in each event and the top 12 finishers in each event advance to the NCAA finals, to be held June 7-10 in Eugene, Ore.
