GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman – South Dakota State saw a second-half surge fall short Monday in the opening round of the Cayman Islands Classic, losing 77-65 to Wyoming at John Gray Gymnasium.

South Dakota State did force 17 Cowboy turnovers and won the rebounding battle 38-35, but three double-figure scorers lifted Wyoming to the win.

Reed Tellinghuisen led the Jacks with 16 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes before fouling out. Mike Daum and Brandon Key had 10 points each. Daum posted a game-high nine boards on the day while David Jenkins Jr. paced the team with four assists.

Out of the locker rooms, SDSU gave up five unanswered points before starting a long climb back, eventually taking a 54-50 lead after a 9-0 run with 9:07 to play.

Back-and-forth play ensued as the teams traded punches over the next two minutes, but with 7:03 to play the Cowboys hit a jumper to go up 58-57 and the Jackrabbits could not regain momentum to pull off the comeback.
