SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State’s Maggie Smither was named Summit League Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.
Smither started all three games at goalkeeper for the Jackrabbits last week and posted a 1-1-1 record with a pair of shutouts. She tallied 21 saves overall and finished the week with an 0.62 goals-against average while facing 50 total shots.
The Sioux Falls native had five saves at home against Arizona State and closed the week with consecutive shutouts against Idaho State and Eastern Washington. She recorded nine saves – the second-most in her career – against the Bengals and had another five saves against the Eagles, a program that made the NCAA Tournament last year.
She also moved into fourth place in SDSU’s record books in career goalie starts (48) and took over the top spot for career ties (eight).
This is Smither’s first weekly honor of the season and third of her career.
The Jackrabbits play host to UMKC on Friday at 6 p.m.
