BROOKINGS – South Dakota State University football coach John Stiegelmeier pleaded no contest to a DUI charge last week and was fined for the conviction.
A fine of $516, court costs of $84 plus a DUI fee of $50 were ordered, according to the Brookings County State’s Attorney’s Office. The judge granted a suspended imposition of sentence March 5, sealing all official records in the case.
Jail time and revocation of driving privileges were not ordered as the sentence was suspended immediately upon the fine and costs being paid, the state’s attorney’s office reported this week. A good behavior provision was not ordered.
The charge dates back to the evening of Jan. 27, when Stiegelmeier was arrested for driving under the influence after a Brookings police officer found him trying to get his car out of a ditch. He said he had too much to drink at home on an empty stomach before he went out to get food that night.
Suspended impositions of sentence are common in first-offense DUI cases, interim Brookings County State’s Attorney Teree Nesvold told the Argus Leader.
A suspended imposition of sentence can only be used once for a misdemeanor and once for a felony in a person’s lifetime, and it seals a criminal conviction to the public as long as all probationary conditions of the sentence are met.
