AURORA – A semi tow truck was a total loss after it caught fire Saturday, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The 1984 Freightliner semi tow truck was reported on fire at noon Saturday at the Aurora Auto Body impound lot in rural Aurora, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.

“The truck had been started and was running and the owner had left for a short time and when he returned, he found that it was on fire. He attempted to put it out with fire extinguishers but was unsuccessful,” Sebring said.

The Aurora Fire Department extinguished the fire.

“The vehicle was a total loss and valued at $40,000,” Sebring said.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, he added.
