SIOUX FALLS – South Dakota State University sophomores Derek Hackman and Gus Steiger were named Wednesday to the 2019 Baseball Academic All-Summit League Team.
Selections of the 10-member squad were determined by a vote among the league’s sports information directors and faculty athletics representatives.
Hackman, a native of Johnston, Iowa, has posted a perfect 4.0 grade-point average while majoring in computer science. He was the Jackrabbits’ regular starter at catcher during the recently completed 2019 season, finishing the year with a .237 batting average, two home runs and 16 runs batted in.
A native of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Steiger has compiled a 3.39 GPA as an exercise science major. He has been an all-Summit League performer each of his first two seasons, including receiving first-team recognition as a shortstop in 2019. Steiger shared the team lead with a .324 batting average, hit five home runs and also led the squad with 43 RBIs, 13 doubles and 18 stolen bases.
