BROOKINGS – The Veterans of Foreign Wars have sponsored scholarships for youth for many years, offering a wide variety of scholarships for different ages.
The VFW Auxiliary also sponsors several scholarships, including the Patriot’s Pen Scholarship for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders.
This scholarship requires a 300- to 400-word essay written on a topic chosen by the VFW commander. This year the topic will be, “Why I Honor the American Flag.”
Entries are due by midnight Oct. 31, 2018. Each entrant must have a South Dakota mailing address. The website www.sdvfwauxiliary.com has the critieria and entry forms needed. The website also provides examples of past winning essays.
The other scholarship sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary is the Young American Creative Art Scholarship. Ninth to 12th-graders are eligible to enter.
The art entry can be a painting done in several different mediums or a dimensional entry. The deadline for the art entries is March 31, 2019.
The artwork must be done during the current school year. The website www.sdvfwauxiliary.com will furnish the criteria, the entry form and examples of past winners.
The VFW sponsors the Voice of Democracy Scholarship. The students entering this scholarship are in grades nine through 12. The entry is orated and must be between three and five minutes long. A written copy of the oration is also required. This year the topic is “Why My Vote Matters.” Deadline is midnight Oct. 31, 2018.
“Please, encourage your students to participate,” said Lois Ladegaard, VFW Auxiliary chairperson. “Secondary education is not cheap, and a $100 award at the local level could be the stepping stone to a much larger scholarship.”
The Patriot’s Pen national winner receives $5,000. The National Young American Creative Art winner receives $10,000 and has their artwork published. The top prize for the VOD winner at the national level is $30,000. “Your students have the opportunity to achieve this success,” Ladegaard said.
Contact Ladegaard at 692-1991 or David Zoelle, 651-1651, VFW scholarship chairman, for further information.
