VOLGA – A combine fire on Sunday that spread to the corn stover caused an estimated $130,000 in damage, according to a news release from the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident, which occurred northwest of Volga at 2:22 p.m. in a field on 207th Street near 461st Street, generated a response from not only the sheriff’s office, but the Bruce and Volga fire departments as well.
In the release, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring wrote that a John Deere 957 was being used to harvest corn when it caught fire. The fire quickly spread to the corn stover. He said that prior to fire personnel arriving and putting out the flames, the owner had attempted to extinguish the stover by discing over the fire.
The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office, Sebring wrote, adding that no injuries were reported.
