Brookings Bobcats’ Johanna Steinlicht completes undefeated season with championship

SIOUX FALLS — Johanna Steinlicht of Brookings won the state championship at 145 pounds while Maizy Mathis of Brookings and Summer Guthmiller of Sioux Valley placed second in their respective brackets at the SDHSAA State Girls Wrestling tournament at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center on Saturday.

Pierre finished first in the tournament with 139 points, followed by Canton (138.5), Harrisburg (102.5), Aberdeen Central (86.0) and Lakota Tech (81.0).

Brookings

Steinlicht took on Pierre’s Ireland Templeton and put her undefeated record on the line in the 145-pound championship. While Steinlicht scored a point on an escape in the second period, Templeton tied the match with a point in the third period that sent the match into a bonus period.

Steinlicht gained control in overtime, pinning Templeton at 6:51 and finishing the season with a perfect record of 33-0.

Mathis faced Viborg-Hurley/Irene-Wakonda’s Gia Miller in the 165-pound championship and scored a takedown to take the lead 62 seconds into the match. Miller tied the match with a reversal with 13 seconds left in the first period but Mathis scored an escape with three seconds left to take a 3-2 lead into the second period.

After beginning the match in a neutral position, Miller scored a takedown early in the second period and scored the pin at 3:31 to win the title.

Mathis finished the season with a record of 24-3.

The Bobcats finished 11th in the tournament with 56 team points.

Sioux Valley

Guthmiller also competed for a championship, taking on Lakota Tech’s Giada Scherich in the 132-pound bracket. Guthmiller took a lead with a takedown in the first period and jumped ahead 4-0 with a reversal in the second period before Scherich scored five straight points with a reversal and a near fall.

With a 5-4 lead, Scherich scored another near fall with 29 seconds left in the match to put it away and win the state title.

Guthmiller finished the season with a record of 39-4.

The Cossacks finished the tournament in 22nd with 24 team points.
