The Rangers kicked off tournament time with their first state championship of the year.

The Brookings Rangers PeeWee A team captured a state championship while tournaments kicked off at several levels in this week’s Ranger Roundup.

PeeWee A

SIOUX CENTER — The Rangers won the state championship by defeating Oahe, Aberdeen and Rushmore over the weekend. Brookings finished the season with 14-2-0-0 and entered the tournament as the second seed in the bracket, defeating the top-seeded Thunder in Sunday’s championship game.

Brookings 10, Oahe 0

The Rangers cruised through their first tournament game on Friday as Kallen Serfling started the scoring with a goal 18 seconds into the game.

Thor Zell scored from Jasper Pitts at 1:32 of the first period before Tegan Jensen had a natural hat trick to close the opening period with a goal from Diers at 3:14, another goal from Diers at 5:20 and an unassisted goal at 9:49.

Diers scored his first goal of the game from Myles Anderson 44 seconds into the second period and Anderson scored from Jensen and Pitts later in the period. Jager Jacobsma got on the scoresheet with his goal from Pitts at 3:14 of the second period before Graham Gerlach gave the Rangers an 8-0 lead at the second intermission with his unassisted goal at 13:52.

Diers scored from Jensen at 1:47 of the third period before Blaine Zweber closed the game with a goal from Jacobsma at 12:02 of the third period.

Isaac Haufschild made six saves for the shutout and the Rangers out-shot the Capitals 40-6.

Brookings 4, Aberdeen 2

The Rangers advanced to the state title game with a win over the Cougars on Saturday afternoon.

Mason Dutenhoeffer put the Cougars in front early with an assist from Coen Viilhauer at 3:48 of the first period but Diers tied the game with an unassisted goal at 4:27.

Aberdeen regained the lead on Camden Cahoy’s goal from Dutenhoeffer and Cody Meyer at 13:15 of the first period but Brookings tied the game on Jensen’s goal from Diers and Jacobsma at 3:12 of the second period.

Diers gave the Rangers the lead with a goal from Jensen at 4:20 of the third period and Jensen added an insurance goal from Luke Luvaas at 13:33 of the third period to seal the win.

Warner Carroll made 17 saves in the win as the Rangers out-shot the Cougars 33-19.

Brookings 5, Rushmore 2

Both teams skated through the first period before Owen Rounds gave the Rangers the lead with an unassisted goal two minutes into the second period. Diers scored on the power play from Jensen at 5:56 of the second period and Zell scored unassisted to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead at 9:06 but Bryson Elias put the Thunder on the board with an assist from Broddic Williams at 14:33 of the second period.

Jack Archer cut the Rangers' lead down to 3-2 with his power play goal from Kalen Turek at 5:53 of the third period but Oliver Ahmann scored from Diers and Rounds at 9:32 and Zell scored from Rounds at 13:28 to win the state title.

Carroll made 22 saves in the win as the Thunder out-shot the Rangers 27-20.

Youth JV

The Rangers won all three games over the weekend, defeating Mitchell on Friday night, Sioux Falls East on Saturday night and Aberdeen on Sunday.

Brookings 4, Mitchell 2

BROOKINGS — The Rangers rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Marlins at the Larson Ice Center on Friday night.

Brody Huls put Mitchell on the board with a goal from Everett Morrison and Blake Brosz at 10:11 of the first period before Waylon Carroll tied the game with his goal from Cody Jacobson at 12:06 of the first period.

Huls scored his second goal of the game from Morrison and Brosz at 12:58 of the first period to put the Marlins back in front but the Rangers countered with three straight goals.

Carroll scored his second goal of the game unassisted to tie the game at 5:22 of the second period and Andrew Hahn scored a power play goal from Jacobson to give Brookings its first lead of the game at 2:12 of the third period.

Parker Nielsen added a power play goal from Andrew Hahn and Carroll at 11:27 of the third period for insurance and Ryder Anderson made 23 saves to seal the win.

Brookings out-shot Mitchell 31-25 and went 2-for-5 on the power play. Mitchell went 0-for-2 with the man-advantage.

Brookings 3, Sioux Falls East 2

SIOUX FALLS — The Rangers fell behind early as Blain Heitmann scored the game’s first goal from Thomas Berdahl and Kevyin Strand at 14:14 of the first period. 

Nielsen tied the game with a power play goal from Carroll at 8:17 of the second period and Cody Jacobson gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead on a goal from Mavrick Bornem at 13:06 of the second period.

Anders Holte tied the game with assists from Tyler Webb and Jaden Hanthorn at 15:52 of the second period but Hahn scored the game-winning goal from Nielsen and Carroll at 10:52 of the third period.

Matthew Bothe started at goalie for the Rangers and made 25 saves. The Flyers out-shot the Rangers 27-15. Brookings went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Flyers went 0-for-1 with the man advantage.

Brookings 3, Aberdeen 1

ABERDEEN — The Rangers set the tone early with a pair of first-period goals in a 3-1 win over the Cougars at Odde Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Jacobson opened the scoring with a power play goal from Caleb Johnson at 10:23 of the first period and Nielsen gave the Rangers a 2-0 lead with his goal from Johnson at 14:31 of the first period.

Jacobson scored his second goal of the game from Nielsen at 5:12 of the third period to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead and Patrick Severson scored the lone goal from Aberdeen from Cameron Bacokous at 14:53 of the third period.

Bothe started at goalie for the Rangers and made 20 saves. Brookings out-shot the Cougars 35-21. Brookings went 1-for-3 on the power play while Aberdeen did not convert their lone opportunity.

Bantam A

The Rangers completed an undefeated regular season by defeating Oahe on Friday night, and Aberdeen on Sunday morning. At 16-0-0-0, the Rangers will open the state tournament against Huron in Pierre on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Brookings 7, Oahe 0

BROOKINGS — The Rangers opened the weekend by shutting out the Capitals at the Brookings Dental Clinic Rink at the Larson Ice Center on Friday night.

Jack Lovseth opened the scoring with a goal from Nolan Krogman and Mason Diers at 11:00 of the first period and Lovseth completed the natural hat trick in the second period, scoring an unassisted goal at 8:07 and a goal from Diers and Isaac Andal at 14:41.

Diers scored an unassisted goal at 5:49 of the third period and Krogman scored another unassisted goal at 6:40 of the third period to give the Rangers a 5-0 lead. Diers scored from Andal at 7:39 of the third period and Lovseth scored his fourth goal of the game from Krogman at 10:55 to cap the scoring.

Neil Trygstad started for Brookings and made four saves to earn the shutout. The Rangers out-shot the Capitals 34-4. Brookings went 0-for-1 on the power play while Oahe did not have an opportunity.

Brookings 4, Aberdeen 0

ABERDEEN — The Rangers picked up their second straight shutout with a win at Odde Arena on Sunday morning.

Jason Ready scored the first goal of the game unassisted at 9:32 of the first period before Diers scored from Lovseth and Mauer Bartley at 13:13 of the first period. 

Carson Kludt scored from Diers and Maxten Jensen 48 seconds into the second period and Ready scored his second goal of the game from Atwood Ahmann to cap the scoring at 4:51 of the second period.

Trygstad stopped all seven shots to earn the shutout and the Rangers out-shot the Cougars 54-7. Brookings went 0-for-3 on the power play while Aberdeen went 0-for-2.

Bantam B

The Rangers completed the regular season and secured the regular season title with an 11-0-0-1 record after defeating Oahe and Aberdeen last weekend.

The Rangers will open the state tournament as the top seed when they play their first game in Rapid City on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Brookings 5, Oahe 1

BROOKINGS — The Rangers opened the weekend by defeating Oahe at the Brookings Dental Clinic rink at the Larson Ice Center on Friday evening.

Grant Horn opened the scoring with a goal from Colt Vanmaanen 23 seconds into the game and Lucas Hovelson scored from Beau Luvaas and Carter Nielsen at 12:23 of the first period to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead.

Horn scored his second goal of the game unassisted at 4:36 of the second period before James Stolley scored the lone goal for Oahe unassisted 53 seconds into the third period. Vanmaanen scored from Horn and Thatcher Haselhorst at 3:27 of the third period and Lucas Hovelson put the game away with an unassisted goal at 5:59 of the third period.

Jon Drew started at goalie and made five saves for the Rangers. Brookings out-shot the Capitals 43-6 and went 0-for-1 on the power play. Oahe did not have a power play in the game.

Brookings 7, Aberdeen 1

ABERDEEN — The Rangers scored three times in the first period and four times in the second period to defeat the Cougars at Odde Arena on Sunday morning.

Horn opened the scoring with a goal from Vanmaanen at 7:08 of the first period and the duo doubled up for their second goal and assist of the game at 10:13 of the first period. 

Hovey scored with an assist from Horn to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead at 13:33 of the first period before Nielsen scored at 6:34 of the second period and Ty Harris scored with an assist from Hovey at 10:47 of the second period to give the Rangers a 5-0 lead.

Cash Wagner scored the lone goal for Aberdeen at 11:07 of the second period but Nielsen scored from Harris and Maxx Anderson at 13:52 of the second period and Hovelson scored from Nielsen at 14:27 of the second period to put the game away.

Drew started at goalie for Brookings and made 17 saves. The Rangers out-shot the Cougars 31-18. Brookings went 0-for-5 on the power play while Aberdeen went 0-for-1 with the man advantage.

Girls 14U

HURON — The Rangers finished in sixth place at the SDAHA State Tournament, picking up a win over Huron on Saturday night but falling to Watertown on Friday and Mitchell on Sunday.

Watertown 4, Brookings 3

The Rangers and Lakers exchanged goals in the first period as Lily Murray opened the game with an unassisted goal at 4:11 and Ashton Otteson scored an unassisted goal at 5:29.

After a scoreless second period, Otteson gave the Rangers the lead with an unassisted goal 42 seconds into the third period. Emma Schleusner tied the game for Watertown at 5:19 of the third period before Gracelyn Webb gave the Lakers a 3-2 lead with an assist from Amerie Serie at 10:11 of the third period.

Otteson tied the game by completing the hat trick from Khloe Ziegeldorf at 13:20 of the third period before Mikenna Knopf scored the game-winning goal for Watertown from Schleusner at 14:20 of the third period.

Avery Dentlinger made 28 saves for the Rangers, who were out-shot by Watertown 32-25. The Rangers went 0-for-1 on the power play while Watertown did not have an opportunity in the game.

Brookings 6, Huron 1

Allie Jacobson opened the scoring for the Rangers with a goal from Otteson 1:08 into the game and Otteson scored a pair of unassisted goals at 5:28 and 8:49 to give Brookings a 3-0 lead at the first intermission.

Otteson completed the natural hat trick with an unassisted goal on the power play at 8:34 of the second period before Taylor Sorben put the All-Stars on the board with a goal from Eloise Hartman at 10:42 of the second period.

Emily Meyer scored with an assist from Otteson at 13:16 of the second period and Otteson completed a six-point game with an unassisted goal at 3:35 of the third period.

Dentlinger made 23 saves in the win and both teams had 24 shots. Brookings went 1-for-2 on the power play while Huron went 0-for-2 with the extra skater.

Mitchell 6, Brookings 5 (OT)

Otteson gave the Rangers an early lead with an unassisted goal 65 seconds into the game but Livaya Mimmack tied the game with a goal at 2:50 of the first period. 

Otteson scored from Meyer at 4:56 of the first period to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead at the first intermission but Analeigh Hotchkiss tied the game with an assist from Mimmack at 6:14 of the second period.

The Rangers took a 3-1 lead into the second intermission thanks to an unassisted goal by Meyer at 11:26 of the second period and a goal from Ziegeldorf from Brooke Kruse at 11:38 of the second period but the Marlins rallied with back-to-back goals from Mimmack (from Hotchkiss at 7:59) and Hotchkiss (from Lyla Morrison) at 10:27 to open the third period.

Kruse gave the Rangers the lead with a goal from Ziegeldorf and Lorelei Koch at 11:47 of the third period but Mimmack completed the hat trick with a goal from Gina Wyatt 27 seconds later to send the game into overtime and scored the game-winner from Wyatt at 5:54 of overtime to help the Marlins claim fifth place.

Dentlinger started in goal and made 26 saves for the Rangers. The Marlins out-shot the Rangers 32-23. Mitchell went 0-for-4 on the power play while the Rangers did not have a power play in the game.

PeeWee B

MITCHELL — The Rangers finished in fourth place at the SDAHA state tournament, defeating Oahe on Friday night, but falling to Aberdeen on Saturday and Watertown on Sunday.

The Rangers finished the season with a record of 11-2-0-1.

Brookings 10, Oahe 0

Pierson Rohl had a hat trick while Jocob Myhre and Liam Heiberger each scored twice as the Rangers defeated the Capitals in the opening game of the tournament.

Deacon Trumbo and Brayden Brintnall each had a goal and an assist while Gavin Zweibahmer and Branch Otteson also scored in the win. Ryker Quam and Jackson Hahn each had an assist.

Porter Vanderbush made five saves for the shutout and the Rangers out-shot the Capitals 23-5.

Aberdeen 4, Brookings 0

Brintnall made 25 saves for the Rangers as the Cougars out-shot Brookings 29-15 on Saturday afternoon.

Watertown 6, Brookings 5

Heiberger had a hat trick and Zweibahmer had a goal and an assist. Berkenhoff had a goal while Rohl, Lovseth and Almhjeld each had an assist. Brintnall made 27 saves and the Rangers were out-shot 33-24.

Squirt A

FARGO — The Rangers picked up a pair of wins over five games at the Fargo Squirt International Tournament last weekend. Brookings’s wins came against West Fargo Black on Friday night and an overtime win over the Scottsdale Junior Coyotes on Saturday.

Brookings 5, West Fargo Black 1

Sutton Jensen and Ryker Schumacher each scored twice to lead the Rangers over West Fargo Black on Friday morning.

Elliott Ahmann had a goal and an assist, Kaden Ziegeldorf had a pair of assists and Max Harris, Cooper Hyde, Brodie Bahe and Finn Konechne each had an assist.

Juke Anderson made 12 saves in the win as the Rangers out-shot West Fargo 27-13.

Chaska Chanhassen Purple 4, Brookings 1

Harris scored the lone goal for the Rangers unassisted in the third period. Anderson made 20 saves while the Rangers were out-shot 24-23.

Mandan Red 5, Brookings 3

Jensen scored in the second period with an assist from Ahmann while Harris and Schumacher scored unassisted goals in the third period of a loss on Saturday morning.

Anderson made 13 saves in the win as the Rangers out-shot Mandan 19-18.

Brookings 3, Scottsdale 2

The Rangers scored twice in the third period with goals from Hendrix Schmeichel and Jensen from Schumacher to force overtime. Hyde scored the game-winner for Brookings in overtime.

Anderson made 14 saves as both teams had 16 shots on goal.

Colorado 6, Brookings 2

Schumacher scored in the first period from Hyde and Harris while Jensen scored from Ahmann in the third period. Anderson made 11 saves as the Rangers out-shot the Rampage 25-17.
