Brookings picks up a win in Rapid City

The Brookings Bobcats went 1-3 during a western road trip this weekend, falling to Rapid City Stevens and Rapid City Central on Friday night and losing to Rapid City Stevens and Douglas on Saturday afternoon.

Brookings picks up a win in Rapid City

RAPID CITY — The Brookings Bobcats went 1-3 during a western road trip this weekend, falling to Rapid City Stevens and Rapid City Central on Friday night and losing to Rapid City Stevens and Douglas on Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats are now 5-3 on the season and will return home to host a doubleheader with Sioux Falls Roosevelt at Bob Shelden Field in Brookings at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Friday

Rapid City Stevens 12, Brookings 2 (6 Innings)

Tyson Antonen drove in the first run of the game in the top of the first inning but Rapid City Stevens took control of the game by scoring five times in the bottom of the second inning.

Ian Beer put the Raiders on the board with an RBI single and scored on Brody Thompson’s triple in the following at-bat. The Raiders scored two runs on an error by Antonen later in the second inning and made it 5-1 on an RBI groundout by Paxton Fisher.

The Raiders added to their lead when Ethan Wilson scored on an Antonen error in the bottom of the fourth inning but Tane Freidrich cut into the lead with an RBI double in the top of the fifth.

Rapid City Stevens scored four times in the bottom of the fifth inning, however, with two runs coming on an RBI single by Luke Hanzlik, another run scoring on a double play and two runs scoring on back-to-back walks by Teagen Smith and Beer.

Wilson delivered an RBI double to end the game in the sixth inning.
David Brink started for the Bobcats, allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Jack Merritt came on in relief and allowed six runs (two earned) on two hits and seven walks with a pair of strikeouts.

Nolan Miles went 1-for-3 in the loss while Austin Clark and Antonen each had stolen bases.

Rapid City Central 13, Brookings 10

The Cobblers got on the board when two runs scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first inning but the Bobcats got a run back on Austin Clark’s groundout in the top of the second inning.

The Bobcats tied the game when Antonen scored on a passed ball in the top of the third inning but the Cobblers jumped back in front when S Solano stole home and Carter Gregory drove in two runs with a single to take a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Clark scored on another Rapid City Central error to make it 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning but gave the run back when two runs scored on Ryan Lockrem’s error in the bottom of the fourth. Laken Uttecht drove in another run with a double later in the fourth inning to make it 8-3 before the Bobcats rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth inning.

The fifth inning was highlighted by Will Conrad’s RBI double and Clark’s RBI single to make it an 8-6 game but Brian Atkinson stole home to put Rapid City Central up 9-6.

Clark drove in a run with a single in the top of the sixth inning but the Cobblers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth with Tanner Staller scoring on a passed ball, Atkinson driving in a pair of runs with a double and Tyler Heinstein driving in a run with a triple.

Friedrich and Lockrem were hit by pitches in back-to-back at-bats with the bases loaded before Conrad drove in a run with a walk in the top of the seventh inning.

Lockrem started the game for the Bobcats, allowing five earned runs on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts over two innings. Miles allowed eight runs (five earned) on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts over 3.1 innings and Addison Ronning allowed one hit while getting the final two outs in the sixth inning.

Clark finished 2-for-5 with three RBI, a walk, a run scored and two stolen bases. Miles went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base. Merritt went 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored and three stolen bases.

Antonen went 1-for-5 with a run scored and two stolen bases. Brink went 1-for-5 with a run scored. Friedrich went 1-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Lockrem went 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI and Conrad went 1-for-3 with two RBI, a double, a walk and a run scored.

Saturday

Rapid City Stevens 14, Brookings 13

Ronning drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning but Rapid City Stevens used a walk by Beer and a sacrifice fly by B Olmsted to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first.

Antonen drove in a run with a single and another run scored on an error by Mason Brooks before Ronning drove in his second run of the game with an RBI single to make it 5-2 Bobcats. Conrad scored on an error, Antonen drove in a run with a single and Brink drew a bases-loaded walk to give Brookings an 8-2 lead in the top of the third inning but Dane Sullivan drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the third inning. Beer, Olmsted and Smith all drove in runs with singles to tie the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the fourth inning and Sullivan drove in the go-ahead run and Thompson drove in another with a sacrifice fly to put Rapid City Stevens up 10-8.

Miles scored on an error to cut the lead down to 10-9 in the top of the fifth inning and tied the game after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning. Ronning gave the Bobcats the lead with a two-run single later in the sixth but the Raiders took the lead with a pair of runs scoring on errors in the bottom of the sixth and Waddell drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk to make it a 14-12 game.

Clark drove in a run on a single in the top of the seventh inning but Miles grounded out with Conrad on second base to end the game.

Antonen started and allowed 10 earned runs on five hits and six walks with three strikeouts over four innings. Conrad allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts over the final two innings.

Antonen went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored while Clark went 2-for-2 with two walks, and three runs scored. Brink went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a walk while Lockrem had two stolen bases. Merritt, Miles and Conrad also had stolen bases for the Bobcats.

Brookings 11, Douglas 4

The Bobcats scored first when Clark scored on an error by Bobby Steffy and Ronning and Friedrich drove in runs with singles to give Brookings a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Douglas answered when Brandon Kolve scored on an error by Friedrich, Aiden Coate scored on a passed ball and Carson Hicks scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom half of the first but Brookings took the lead back on Antonen’s double in the top of the third inning.

Winston Plummer drove in a run with a single to give the Bobcats a 5-3 lead later in the third inning and the Bobcats added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by RBI singles by Clark and Merritt.

Steffy scored after stealing home in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it a 7-4 game but Brookings’s offense kept going, adding a run on an error and two more runs on singles by Friedrich and Plummer to go ahead 10-4 in the top of the sixth inning.

Antonen finished the game with a sacrifice fly to drive in a run in the top of the seventh inning.

Breck Wilson started for the Bobcats and allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Ronning finished the game allowing one hit while striking out the side in the seventh inning.

Clark finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a walk, an RBI and three stolen bases. Merritt went 2-for-4 with an RBI a run scored and two stolen bases. Ronning went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Antonen went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and two RBI. Friedrich finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Plummer finished 2-for-5 with two RBI. Lockrem finished 1-for-3 and Conrad finished 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Miles also went 1-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base in the win.
