Brookings Rangers earn fifth-place finish at state tournament

Brookings Rangers earn fifth-place finish at state tournament

WATERTOWN — The Brookings Rangers finished in fifth place, winning their final two games to close the 2024 SDAHA Girls State Hockey Tournament this past weekend.

With wins over Watertown and Rushmore, the Rangers finished the year with an overall record of 9-8-0-0.

Oahe 6, Brookings 3

The Capitals scored four times in the third period to defeat the Rangers in their opening game of the tournament on Friday afternoon.

The Rangers took an early lead with a pair of first-period goals as Ava Kahle scored unassisted at 7:544 and Miyah Foerster scored with an assist from Kahle at 9:36. But the Capitals returned the favor in the second period with a power play goal by Dakota Mcentaffer from Micah Buffalo at 9:17 and a goal by Emily Nemec from Katherin Reiss at 16:54.

Going into the third period tied at 2-2, the Capitals took the lead on a power play goal by Buffalo with assists from Aubrey Stewart and Mcentaffer at 2:40. Haley Fuerst gave Oahe a 4-2 lead with an assist from Mallory Lehrkamp at 9:40 before Sawyer Tripplett cut into the lead for Brookings with her power play goal from Kahle and Foerster at 11:09.

The Rangers couldn’t find the equalizer, however, as Brylee Kafka scored an unassisted goal to give Oahe a 5-3 lead at 13:25 of the third period. Nemec finished the win with an empty net goal from Kafka at 16:22.

Rorii Quam made 29 saves for the Rangers. Oahe out-shot Brookings 35-24. The Rangers went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Capitals were 2-for-2 with the extra skater.

Brookings 5, Watertown 2

The Rangers advanced to the consolation championship with a win over the Lakers on Saturday.

Kinzey Grendler gave the Rangers the lead with a goal from Anna Rasmussen at 3:29 of the first period before Harper Hendricks tied the game with a goal from Emma Schleusner and Janel Lloyd at 4:01.

Ashton Otteson scored an unassisted goal at 11:52 of the first period to give Brookings a 2-1 lead at the first intermission and the Rangers broke the game open with three goals in the second period.

Grendler scored her second goal of the game unassisted to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead at 4:16 of the second period before Foerster scored from Julissa Peterson and Triplett at 11:58 and Peterson scored another power-play goal from Triplett at 14:21.

Schleusner scored the final goal of the game for Watertown unassisted at 7:39 of the third period.

Quam made 21 saves in the win. The Lakers out-shot the Rangers 23-21. Brookings went 2-for-4 on the power play while Watertown was 0-for-3 with the extra skater.

Brookings 3, Rushmore 0

Quam made 23 saves and Grendler scored twice to help the Rangers win the consolation championship on Sunday morning.

The Rangers and Thunder skated through two scoreless periods before Triplett put the Rangers on the board with assists from Maya Edmison and Kahle at 1:11 of the third period. Grendler doubled the lead scoring from Foerster and Rasmussen at 13:14 before finishing the game with an empty net goal from Rasmussen at 14:38.

The Rangers out-shot the Thunder 38-23 and went 0-for-1 on the power play. Rushmore did not have a power play in the game.
