CASTLEWOOD — The Sioux Valley Cossacks hit the road but were on the wrong end of a nine-run fifth inning as the Castlewood Warriors earned a 16-6 win on Monday afternoon.

The Warriors got on the board in the first inning when Gracie Hauge’s two-out double allowed her to score on Abby Axtell’s error in the following at-bat. Castlewood extended its lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI single by Cassidy Kirwan and took a 5-0 lead after Hauge’s RBI single and Sophia Kudma scored on an error.

Sioux Valley got the bats going in the top of the third when Kassidy Smith hit a triple and scored on an error by Cydni Kudma and Morgan Lemme followed suit with a triple of her own before scoring on another error by Cydni Kudma.

Castlewood got the runs back in the bottom of the third, however, when Lucy Jacobson scored on an error and Kayla Goens delivered an RBI single to make it a 7-2 game.

The Cossacks made things interesting by rallying for four runs in the top of the fifth inning when Riley Stirling scored on a fielder’s choice and Axtell and Zaylee Lantgen drove in runs with singles. Sioux Valley cut the lead down to 7-6 when Axtell scored on an error later in the inning but Castlewood responded with nine runs in the fifth to put the game away.

Sophia Kurdna started the scoring with an RBI single before Hauge was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Bridgette Horn drove in a run with a single and Jacobsen hit a grand slam to make it a 14-6 game.

After Karli Akin was hit by a pitch, Kirwan ended the game with a two-RBI triple.

Axtell took the loss for the Cossacks, allowing seven runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts over 2.2 innings. Lantgen pitched in relief allowing nine runs (eight earned) on five hits and two walks with a strikeout over the final 1.2 innings.

Summer Guthmiller finished 2-for-3 with a double while Smith finished 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Katie Richarz also had a single in the win.

Claire Horn earned the win for the Warriors, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts over five innings.

The loss drops the Cossacks to 1-1 on the season ahead of their next game at Baltic at 4 p.m. on Friday.
