Cossacks go 1-2 at Watchdog Classic

The Sioux Valley Cossacks won one of three games at the Watchdog Classic on Saturday morning. The Cossacks defeated Flandreau 7-3 but lost to Alcester-Hudson 12-4 and Tri-Valley 7-6.

Cossacks go 1-2 at Watchdog Classic

BALTIC — The Sioux Valley Cossacks won one of three games at the Watchdog Classic on Saturday morning. The Cossacks defeated Flandreau 7-3 but lost to Alcester-Hudson 12-4 and Tri-Valley 7-6.

The Cossacks are now 10-5 on the season and will travel to Redfield for a game at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Sioux Valley 7, Flandreau 3

The Cossacks scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning when Abby Axtell drove in a run with a ground out and Summer Guthmiller drove in a second run with a single.

Flandreau took the lead in the top of the second beginning with four straight walks including a bases-loaded walk by Rylee Allen and used a pair of runs on fielder’s choices to take a 3-2 lead.
Sioux Valley rebounded in the top of the third inning when

Guthmiller scored on an error before Katie Richarz and Kassidy Smith each drew bases loaded. Morgan Lemme drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Riley Stirling drove in a run with a single to cap the scoring.

Smith made the start allowing three earned runs on one hit and five walks over 2.1 innings. Zoey Lantgen finished the game allowing one hit with a strikeout in 2.2 shutout innings.

Smith went 1-for-1 with a triple, three walks, a stolen base, a run scored and an RBI. Stirling went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Guthmiller went 2-for-3 with an RBI, two stolen bases and a run scored. A Murano went 1-for-1 with a double.

Lemme walked once, stealing two bases with an RBI and a run scored. Axtell drew a walk with an RBI. A Jacobson drew a walk with a stolen base. Lantgen walked once and scored a run and Richarz walked once, driving in a run and scoring a run. Cameron Uecker also scored a run, drove in a run and stole a base.

Olivia Peters started for Flandreau, allowing seven runs (six earned on four hits and eight walks with three strikeouts. Nora Hamilton finished the game allowing one hit and a walk with a strikeout over 2.2 shutout innings.

Allen went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Hallieanne Schepel went 1-for-1 with a walk. Sadie Iott walked once with a stolen base and a run scored. Addy Hammer walked once and scored a run.

Alcester-Hudson 12, Sioux Valley 4

The Cubs struck first scoring runs on RBI singles by Elly Doering and Hannah Ahart and three runs off of errors to take a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Emma Moller tacked on with an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning and the Cubs added another run on an error before Ahart’s second RBI single of the game made it 8-0.

Sioux Valley chipped into the lead with a fielder’s choice in the top of the third inning but Alcester-Hudson extended their advantage with an RBI groundout by Delta Pies, a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded and two more runs on errors to go ahead 12-1.

Jacobson drove in a run on a ground out and Lemme drove in a run with a single in the top of the fourth inning and Uecker drove in a run with an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning.

Axtell started for the Cossacks allowing 12 runs (two earned) on 10 hits and two walks over four innings.

Summer Guthmiller went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Savana Guthmiller went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Jacobson walked and drove in a pair of runs while Smith walked, scored two runs and had a stolen base.

Tri-Valley 7, Sioux Valley 6

The Cossacks got on the board on Summer Guthmiller’s single in the top of the first inning but Tri-Valley took the lead on Ava Christensen’s RBI single and Reagan Pearson’s RBI double in the bottom of the second inning.

Axtell tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the third inning before Davey put the Mustangs back on top with an RBI single in the bottom of the third. Danika Fluth drove in a pair of runs with a single later in the third and Tri-Valley added a run on an error to go ahead 6-2.

The Mustangs scored another run on an error in the bottom of the fourth inning before Savana Guthmiller drove in a pair of runs with a triple, Jacobson drove in a run with a double and Lantgen drove in a run with a single to make it a 7-6 game in the top of the fifth inning, but the Cossacks couldn’t find the equalizer.

Lantgen started for Sioux Valley and allowed seven runs (two earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts over four innings.
