Dineen, Dupel place at U20 U.S. Open

LAS VEGAS — South Dakota State wrestlers Thomas Dineen and Colin Dupill turned in top-eight placings in the freestyle division during competition over the weekend at the 2024 U20 U.S. Open.

Dineen, a native of Hancock, Minnesota, placed fourth in the 97-kilogram weight class after posting a 3-2 record in the two-day competition. Wrestling as a member of the Jackrabbit Wrestling Club, Dineen moved into the quarterfinals with two victories on Friday, then dropped an 11-1 decision (VSU1) Saturday morning to Camden McDanel of Ohio. He came back with a 10-0 victory over Ian Smith of the CrossTrained Weigh In Club before being edged by Steven Burrell Jr. of the Cavalier Wrestling Club, 4-1, in the third-place bout.

Dupill saw extensive of mat action over the two days of competition, posting an 8-3 record en route to an eighth-place finish in the 70-kilogram class. A native of Greeneville, Dupill dropped his opening-round match before reeling off eight consecutive wins in the wrestlebacks by a combined score of 86-9 to earn a spot in the placing matches.

In all, nine members of the SDSU wrestling team plus three incoming recruits competed in the freestyle division of 2024 U.S. Open. All 12 current and future Jackrabbits won at least one match, including Moses Espinoza-Owens, who notched a 5-2 record in the 74-kilogram weight class.

Incoming recruit Cale Seaton also competed in the U20 Greco Roman division at 60 kilograms and came away with a 4-2 record after posting a fourth-place finish.
