The Brookings Rangers wrapped up the 2023-24 season by traveling for the SDAHA State Junior Varsity Tournament at the Odde Ice Center last weekend.

Brookings Rangers compete in Junior Varsity State Tournament

ABERDEEN — The Brookings Rangers wrapped up the 2023-24 season by traveling for the SDAHA State Junior Varsity Tournament at the Odde Ice Center last weekend.
Brookings lost to Aberdeen on Friday night and Mitchell on Saturday afternoon to finish the season with a record of 11-5-1-0 in conference play.

Aberdeen 6, Brookings 5

The Cougars jumped in front with three goals in the first period using Brady Oswald’s goal from Jackson Garstecki and Levi Little at 6:47 to get on the board and goals from Wheeler Malsam from Karsten Jeschke at 9:56 and Garstecki from Little at 10:25 to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

Oswald scored his second goal of the game from Little 25 seconds into the second period before Andrew Hahn put Brookings with a power play goal 21 seconds later from Parker Nielsen and Cody Jacobson.

Logan Fischback scored an unassisted goal at 3:25 of the third period before Brookings rallied with goals by Hahn from Nielsen at 10:28 and Caleb Johnson from Cooper Schneider and Mavrick Bortnem at 12:20 to make it a 5-3 game at the second intermission.

Jacobson scored from Johnson and Nielsen at 3:21 of the third period to cut the Cougars lead down to 5-4 but Karsten Jeschke made it a two-goal game with an assist from Austin Schmit at 8:10 of the third period.
Walon Carroll scored from Parker Nielsen at 9:52 of the third period but the Rangers could not find the equalizer, allowing the Cougars to advance to the semifinals.

Ryder Anderson started the game and made six saves on 11 shots while Matthew Both made 14 saves on 15 shots after coming in during the second period.

The Rangers out-shot the Cougars 47-26 and went 2-for-6 on the power play. Aberdeen went 0-for-3 with the man advantage.

Mitchell 6, Brookings 2

The Marlins scored the first six goals of the game including two from Victor Contreras and two from Pacxton Denne to advance to the consolation championship on Saturday afternoon.

Jacobson put Brookings on the board with an assist from Ashton Baker at 15:08 of the third period and Jacobson scored again 48 seconds later to cap the scoring for the Rangers.

Bothe started and made 23 saves for Brookings. The Rangers out-shot the Marlins 31-29 and went 0-for-5 on the power play. Mitchell went 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
