BROOKINGS – The Brookings Rangers boys varsity team lost to Yankton on Friday night but bounced back with a win over Brandon Valley on Saturday.
The Rangers lost 5-1 on Friday and then came away with a 9-1 victory on Saturday night. Brookings is now 12-6-2 on the year and has two games remaining. The Rangers will play at Pierre Oahe on Feb. 21 at 7:15 p.m. and then will host Sioux Center on Feb. 27 at 8 p.m.
Friday
Yankton 5, Brookings 1
The Bucks led 3-1 at the end of the first period and didn’t look back, scoring a goal in each of the final two periods.
Kylen O’Connor put Yankton up 1-0 just over four minutes into the game. He was assisted by Tucker Renken and Jack Pedersen. Mauer Bartley tied things up two minutes and four seconds later and he was assisted by Jackson Heller. O’Connor scored again with 3:19 to go in the period to give Yankton back the lead. This time he was assisted by Pedersen. Easton Vellek would increase the lead to 3-1 just before the buzzer as he scored an unassisted goal with six seconds left.
O’Connor scored the final two goals of the game for Yankton. The first came with 12:05 to go in the second period and he was assisted by Luke Moeller. The next one was with 7:42 left in the final period and it was assisted by Pedersen.
Brookings outshot Yankton 27-23. Neil Trygstad had 18 saves for the Rangers.
Saturday
Brookings 9, Brandon Valley 1
The Rangers scored four goals in the first period, three in the second and two in the third.
Jason Ready scored the first goal for the Rangers one minute and 21 seconds into the game. He was assisted by Cade Zweber. Cooper Schneider made it 2-0 one minute and 12 seconds later and he was assisted by Mason Diers.
Maxten Jensen pushed the lead to 3-0 with a goal with 10:17 to go in the opening period and he was assisted by Diers and Cannon Friedrich. Ready scored again with just over seven minutes to go in the period. It was a power play goal and he was assisted by Talon Hyde and Jay Harris.
Justin Pederson scored the only goal of the game for Brandon Valley with 10:19 to go in the second. He was assisted by Maxwell Peters and Max Miller. Harris scored on the power play to make it 5-1 and he was assisted by Nolan Krogman. Brookings then scored two goals in a span of 29 seconds. Hyde netted the first one and was assisted by Heller and Caleb Johnson. Ready completed a hat trick with the other goal and he was assisted by Parker Nielsen and Zweber.
Hyde would score two goals in the third to complete a hat trick of his own. The first came with 3:39 to go in the game and he was assisted by Heller. He then scored on the power play with two minutes to play and was assisted by Ready and Harris to make the final 9-1.
Brookings had 62 shots and Brandon Valley had 10. Ryder Anderson and Matthew Bothe split duties in net for the Rangers and combined to make nine saves.
