LAKE PRESTON – A Brookings man has been identified as the victim in a Friday morning ice fishing accident on Lake Whitewood.

Donald Lockwood, 89, and another man fell through the ice when they were on the lake near Lake Preston. First responders were called to the scene shortly after 9:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Kingsbury County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities were able to rescue one man from the lake and took him to the hospital about 10:30 a.m., and the body of a second man, Lockwood, was found around noon.

Law enforcement officials are reminding the public to use extreme caution when ice fishing and say that the ice is not safe in many areas due to recent warm temperatures. There were additional reports of individuals falling through the ice on area lakes this weekend.
