11-run first inning leads Cubs past Saints

BROOKINGS – The Cubs exploded for 11 runs in the opening inning while beating the Sioux Falls Saints 19-10 in an amateur baseball game Monday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings sent 16 batters to the plate in the big frame. The home team tallied eight hits, drew four walks and had one hit batsmen.

Skyler Cary, Jeff Fish and Sam McMacken had consecutive singles to put Brookings on the board.

Jacolby Anderson walked to load the bases and Ty Schneider also drew a free pass to force in Fish. Kenneth Negron’s pop-fly single to shallow left-center field made it 3-0.

Curt Anderson plated Jacolby Anderson with a sacrifice fly and Austin Koenig followed with a run-scoring hit to put the Cubs on top 5-0.

With two outs, Cary lifted a two-run single to center to give Brookings a 7-0 advantage.

Fish singled and McMacken walked to load the bases. Cary scored on a wild pitch and Jacolby Anderson drew a walk to again load the bases.

Schneider was hit by a pitch, forcing in Fish, and Negron capped the big inning with a two-run single – making it 11-0.

The Saints got on the board in the second as Don Strand walked to force in Will Year, who led off the inning with a single. Josh Nevin’s three-run double cut the deficit to 11-4.

In the bottom of the second, Koenig singled, Cary reached on a one-out walk and McMacken was hit by a pitch with two away.

Koenig scored on a passed ball, Cary sprinted home on a wild pitch and McMacken scored on a passed ball to make it 14-4.

Kyle Krogman had an RBI single in the third and Curt Anderson stroked a run-scoring double in the fourth to push the margin to 16-4.

Sioux Falls’ Kevin Corcoran tallied a two-run single in the fifth to make it 16-6.

Krogman opened the bottom of the fifth with a single and scored on Cary’s two-bagger soon thereafter to give the Cubs a 17-6 lead.

Nevin walked and Mark Abrahamson singled to put runners on the corners for the Saints in the top of the sixth. Nevin scored on a double steal, leaving the score at 17-7.

Krogman’s sacrifice fly drove in Schneider, who reached on an error, in the bottom of the sixth.

Sioux Falls trimmed the margin to 18-10 in the seventh as Strand had an RBI single and Nevin followed with a two-run double.

Jacolby Anderson blasted a solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to provide for the final margin.

The Cubs racked up 20 hits and 10 free passes, including eight walks, for the game.

Cary finished 4-for-6 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Koenig was 3-for-6 with an RBI.

Negron ended up 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Jacolby Anderson was 2-for-3 with a homer, three walks and four runs scored.

Krogman went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Jearl Jesson was 2-for-2 after entering the game in the sixth inning and Fish finished 2-for-5. Schneider and Curt Anderson both notched a pair of RBIs. McMacken scored three times. Mike Graybill, who entered in the sixth, also had a hit.

Curt Anderson gave up six runs – four earned – on five hits and seven walks with six strikeouts in five innings of action.

Jacolby Anderson allowed four runs on four hits and three walks with a strikeout over the next 1 1/3 innings. Krogman retired all five batters he faced, including three by strikeout. Fish tossed the ninth, surrendering a hit and striking out one.

For the Saints, Nevin notched five RBIs on the two doubles. Chris Thompson, who doubled, and Corcoran added two hits apiece. Strand had two RBIs.

Jordan Schievelbien took the loss on the mound after giving up 11 runs on eight hits and four walks in two-thirds of an inning.

Brookings (13-2) returns to action with a game at Brandon Valley on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
