11A: Verley sets rushing record in Canton’s 46-8 win over Lennox

BROOKINGS – Kayden Verley ran for an 11-man championship game record 309 yards on 31 carries – a 9.68 average – as third-seeded Canton drilled fourth-seeded Lennox 46-8 in the Class A final Thursday night at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

He ran for a pair of touchdowns, finished 3-of-3 for 35 yards and a score through the air, recorded an 11-yard reception, booted a field goal and made all four of his PAT kicks.

The 344 total yards of offense is an 11A final record.

Verley was named Jim Langer MVP and Outstanding Back. Zach Richardson was Most Outstanding Lineman.

The C-Hawks outgained the Orioles 492-234, including 424-147 on the ground. Neither team turned the ball over.

Verley threw a 6-yard TD toss to Shaeden Scheidt a little over 3 minutes into the game and added the PAT kick. He then booted a 34-yard field goal and later found the end zone on a 13-yard rush. Seth Peterson hit Scheidt for the two-point conversion to make it 18-0 late in the first.

Lennox’s lone touchdown came at the 8:09 mark of the second as Haden Mendel plunged in from a yard out. Brandon Fodness caught a pass from Josh Arlt for the two-pointer to cut the deficit to 18-6.

That where the score stood until the third period. with Peterson hooked up with Jaden Dominissee for a 13-yard score. Verley’s kick put Canton on top 25-8 with 8:25 left in the period.

Verly broke off a 91-yard touchdown run 2 minutes later and again kicked the PAT.

Isaac Dietzenbach’s 4-yard TD followed by a Verley kick made it 39-8 late in the third.

Zander Elling added a 10-yard scoring rush with 2:16 remaining in the game and Darin Swier kicked the PAT.

Peterson was 4-of-5 for 33 yards with the score. Dietzenbach ran for 58 yards and had three catches covering 25 yards. Elling added 31 yards on the ground.

Lance Tieszen recorded 10 tackles and Zach Richardson added nine, as both players recorded a sack.

Canton finished the season 10-2 and Lennox ended up 7-5. The C-Hawks beat the Orioles 31-0 in the regular season Sept. 27 in Canton.

For the Orioles, Mendel picked up 94 yards on 13 rushes. Arlt ended up 9-of-22 for 87 yards and ran for 57 yards. Brandon Fodness made 16 stops.

Notes: 

Canton remained perfect in finals at 4-0. The C-Hawks were 11A champs in 1985 and 2006 and 11B winners in 2013. … It marked Lennox’s second appearance all-time. The Orioles beat Belle Fourche 21-0 in the 11A final in 1982 – the second year of championship games.
