11 new COVID-19 deaths, 319 new cases reported in South Dakota Friday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 11 new COVID-19 deaths and 319 new cases in South Dakota Friday.

Twelve of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 3,353 total cases (five new confirmed and seven new probable): 3,104 of those people have recovered (19 new), with 217 active cases (down by seven) and 32 deaths (no change). A total of 10,704 people (25 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 115 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There are no COVID-19 occupied hospital beds at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Friday.

Brookings County remains in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 106,716 (319 new – 247 confirmed plus 72 probable) as of midday Friday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 4,090 are classified as active (up by one from Thursday). As of Friday, 100,942 people have recovered (304 new), 6,159 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (26 new), 177 people are currently hospitalized (down by eight) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,684 people have died (11 new).

The SDDOH website reports 288,761 people (646 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new deaths, nine women and two men, are being reported in Beadle, Clay, Davison, Fall River, Gregory, Hughes, Meade, Pennington (2), Todd and Tripp counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 40-49 years, two 60-69 years, two 70-79 years and six in the 80-plus years category.

Increases in positive cases Friday included, but are not limited to, 14 in Brown County, 14 in Grant, 14 in Lincoln, 84 in Minnehaha and 42 in Pennington.

The counties with the highest total case counts are Minnehaha (26,676), Pennington (12,181), Lincoln (7,328), Brown (4,825) and Codington (3,705).

The SDDOH website reported midday Friday that 69,104 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 54,617 people in South Dakota.

In Brookings County, 1,799 vaccine doses have been administered to 1,444 people.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
