15 new COVID-19 deaths, 425 new cases reported in South Dakota Friday

BROOKINGS – The state is reporting 15 new COVID-19 deaths and 425 new cases in South Dakota Friday.

Fourteen of the new cases are in Brookings County.

Brookings County cases have risen to 3,268 total cases (nine new confirmed and five new probable): 3,002 of those people have recovered (14 new), with 234 active cases (no change) and 32 deaths (no change). A total of 10,521 people (47 new) have tested negative in Brookings County, and 114 people (no change) in the county have been hospitalized at some point, the state reported.

There is one COVID-19 occupied hospital bed at the Brookings Hospital, the DOH website reported Friday.

Brookings County remains in the “substantial” community spread category.

The number of COVID-19 cases in South Dakota rose to 104,937 (425 new – 298 confirmed plus 127 probable) as of midday Friday, according to the South Dakota Department of Health.

Of the statewide cases, 4,732 are classified as active (up by four from Thursday). As of Friday, 98,576 people have recovered (406 new), 6,023 South Dakotans have been hospitalized at some point (25 new), 227 people are currently hospitalized (down by 20) for transmission-based precautions, and 1,629 people have died (15 new).

The SDDOH website reports 284,571 people (911 new) have tested negative in South Dakota.

The new deaths, nine women and six men, are being reported in Brown (2), Buffalo, Clark, Davison, Dewey (2), Hamlin, Hughes, Hutchinson, Minnehaha, Moody, Pennington and Union (2) counties. The age ranges of the deceased are one 50-59 years, two 60-69 years, six 70-79 years and six in the 80-plus years category.

Increases in positive cases Friday included, but are not limited to, 28 in Lincoln County, 99 in Minnehaha, 51 in Pennington and 21 in Union.

The counties with the highest total case counts are Minnehaha (26,288), Pennington (11,982), Lincoln (7,190), Brown (4,741) and Codington (3,652).

The SDDOH website reported midday Friday that 53,775 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to 44,057 people in South Dakota.

In Brookings County, 1,361 vaccine doses have been administered to 1,144 people.

The figures released by the state Department of Health do not include individuals who are asymptomatic or have symptoms of the coronavirus but are not being tested.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
